Most of my bikes would be escorted to the JA thread.

Yeah, it does. I ride 700c rear/650c front on all my bikes. Well, no the road bike, but on all my track/fixed gear bikes.

But why? If only on the track I can maybe see it, but it already has steep track geometry. It's only steeper with the 650 wheel. If it's on the road then you have to carry two sizes of tubes or make the 650 stretch to fit the 700.

I ride super small frames, usually always the smallest ones offered. This is a 49cm. And honestly, the reason is 90% superficial. I hate sloping top tubes. So I drop the front wheel to a 650c in order to even out my top tube. But you can see, even with the 650c up front, my top tube still slopes from the head tube back to the seat tube. I hate it. If anything, I want a pursuit/lo pro frame with a negative slope.

Also, ya know, if I ever have my risers/flats on and feel like doing a bar spin from time to time. Definitely don't have clearance with a 700c upfront.

I also never ride with tubes. /shrugs

I'm a little confused. Usually when people choose to ride smaller frames, they'll have a 150mm stem and a foot of seatpost.

Your bike looks like it's properly setup for a smaller person with a regular length stem and less than a handful of seatpost.

It's also kind of contradictory you always choose the smallest frame available but also despise sloping top tubes....in most frames, the smallest sized frame is the ONLY geo that has a sloping top tube. Had you gone one or two sizes up, you would have a horizontal top tube.

It's like a Cannondale Track....2cm changes the whole look of the frame.

50cm...sloping top tube.

52cm...lo-pro angled sloping top tube

I only choose the smallest frame available because I'm a very short man. 28 years old, standing 5'4" with 28" inseam. I don't really have the option/luxury to move to the next size up.

I think he is on the shorter side so he has to get the smaller frames. But doesn't like the sloping top tubes so he lowers the front end with the smaller wheel. Not something I would do but if it works for him then so be it. Smaller frames tend to have slacker head angles anyway.

I am honestly learning a lot in this thread, especially this last page. Oh, and I am not posting my fixed gear. Most of you would call it JA, but it puts a huge smile on my face so I ride the hell out of it.

Good catch. Definitely a no-no. A small bike shouldn't require a 650 front wheel. I know the terry bikes did it for women, but those frames are for very short people (below 5 feet generally.) (Actually I think they used 24 inch front wheels?)

I'm confused. Why not buy a bike that doesn't have a sloping top tube? May be a bit harder to find with it being small, but switching out to a 650c wheel would mess with the geometry and handling in ways that I wouldn't want to deal with. Increases the head tube angle, decreases trail, and compromises handling making the bike twitchy. (I think all those statements are correct, please somebody correct me if I'm wrong.)

Sloping top tube bikes only got popular in the late 90s if I recall correctly. Plenty of gorgeous and worthy bikes around before that.

I'm shorter than you with same inseam. I ride a 49cm Soma Rush which has a level top tube. If it's so important to you to have a level TT, then maybe you should consider getting something like that.

ahhh...that makes sense. When you said you chose small frames for "90% superficial," I assumed it means purposely choosing the smallest frame regardless of which one fits you. That makes a lot more sense.

Just post it.

I've come to the realization that just about everything I like about track bikes defies logic and falls in the jack-ass territory. When I choose new parts, it's either "that looks fun" or "that looks cool to me."

My bike almost feels like a big kids BMX bike...I love riding it/makes me smile every time.

There is probably a reason why almost all of my bike compliments while out riding come from the 12-16yo "Sweet fixie!" crowd. haha

I'm currently building a MTB and it's so boring compared to my fixed gear.

Mine is the same way. Mostly kids on their Pure Fix or 6KU's. It has an Aerospoke on it. Not gonna post it though. 0 f's given about that Aerospoke. I like it.

That's one way to drastically change how a bike handles.

Just out of curiosity, have either of you guys run a 650 wheel on a 700 fork? Because this seems like one of those things that makes sense on paper, but doesn't translate to actuality. I've been riding for 10+ years. I have a beater running 2 700's on it. I have my Bianchi with the 700/650. I popped the tube in the 650 and rode 2 700's for a couple months. I feel absolutely no difference in the handling. It all feels the same to me.

You can fix up a used bike with little money and make it look completely badass.
You can also dump tons of cash into a bike/best parts and have it end up looking like a complete mess.

My bike was on one of the previous pages..the only thing I bought new were tires, chain, chainring, cog, and grips. Everything was trades, ebay, old parts I had from many years ago, deals on craigslist, used shops..etc...
