More details? Perhaps some info about your spider, BCD, chainring, etc.

I bet you're using aluminium chairing bolts, I've busted a few of those in the past and switching to steel bolts took care of that issue.

If you're using steel bolts already, then I think you're way too gnarly for your sweet fixies.

stele bolts!

1/8th inch chainring (brand, and size)
sugino messenger crankset

this was the 4th one i busted today in a matter of months

i am a big guy, 6'3" 225.. too much mang for the sw8 fixie :(

NikZak 01-05-11 10:31 PM

i think you need to stop riding for about 6 months... clearly your quads have become man mountains of meat and muscle and have the force to smash high-tensile steel bolts...

When you install the steel bolts, tighten them properly.

Still using that hi-ten junk? Anybody who matters knows only the low quality bikes are made outta that stuff. Better get some carbon bolts, or at least titanium to withstand huge forces on your sweet fixxie.

(In all seriousness, get some steel bolts.)

Clean / grease / tighten your chainring bolts once a month or so. Loose bolts = broken bolts.

c0urt 01-05-11 11:23 PM

Take your chain ring off and make sure it isn't warped.
If it is bent then bolt is not going on far enough, and they will eventually break.

Also clean your ring and the bolt holes before you put the bolts in, and tighten them properly like several people have noted.
And don't just take replace the one bolt, take them off and replace them all and tighten them at the same time. In a star pattern like you would a car.

I think this is key.

Make sure when you put them on,

torque them down in the star pattern, Start with one. And draw a star. That way you apply even pressure on every bolt.

I forgot how many pound inches they are supposed to be torqued at.

I'll tell you when i see the chart at the shop.

jdgesus 01-06-11 12:23 AM

i pound inches all night long

Sorry... you just aren't that awesome.

Follow the suggestions that have been given and the bolt breakage should stop.

vw addict 01-06-11 06:53 AM

do you break teeth off cogs too?

jdgesus 01-06-11 04:14 PM

i break tines of forks when i eat.

am now swapping all bolts in star pattern scheme.
i'll even remove them in a star pattern, just upside down
