removing fork...

I take out my stem, and my fork doesn't come out...

And i cant get the compression spacer out.. its pissing me off...

People say knock it out with a hammer.. On the road bike i just drop the stem and brakes the whole fork flops down.

On the mericer the fork just flops out...

How do i remove the fork from my 1/8 sealed headset..

Listen to the people who tell you to knock it out with a hammer.

evilcryalotmore 01-11-11 08:57 PM

Scrodzilla 01-11-11 09:12 PM

I've also had this problem with my Motobecane. I wanted to repack the headset, but I couldn't remove the fork. I even smacked it pretty hard a couple times with a hard rubber mallet. Nothing. The compression spacer is stuck real good.

Headsets with open caged bearings don't have a compression spacer. Anyways, on my two bd bikes with open bearing headsets, the forks just drop out as soon as the stem is removed.

so what do i do bross.

FastJake 01-11-11 09:42 PM

Hit the top of the steerer with rubber mallet. Repeat until desired result is achieved.

If you only have a steel hammer, place your hand on the steerer before hitting to avoid damaging it.

Get off the forum and play around with the fork to see how it works.

Go go go!

I noticed that the plastic compression ring used to center the steerer can cause it to bind when you try to remove it. Give the top of the steerer a couple taps with a rubber mallet, push the fork back up the head tube, and pull the plastic ring out. The fork should just drop right out.
