Hi-

I'm trying to build up a freewheel back wheel for my single speed (it used to be a fixie) but I don't know specific parts very well.

Anyone have a good recommendation on a hub (flip flop would be cool, but definitely something that can take a freewheel) and freewheel? Also, a rim suggestion would be great! I was leaning towards the Velocity Deep V's. Seems like it's a very common choice.

My hub spacing is 135 mm.

I'll be using the bike mostly for commuting so emphasis should be on that.

It's an unusual choice for a "fixie", but in your case I would recommend something like this:

Please note, this hub will NOT allow you to go fixed gear. But what's nice is that it's already spaced to 135mm, and you can buy single speed cogs cheaper than freewheels and easily swap them out (with a cassette lockring tool and chain whip.) Another bonus of running the Freehub is that it doesn't matter what your chainline is in front, you can put the cog where ever you want.

Velocity Deep V is always a good choice. I built up a wheel with a Kinlin rim and I'm pretty happy with it so far. Not as many color choices though:

Formula hubs/Deep-v's are a popular choice. and can be had quite cheap.

I'm a Mavic Fan. and would recommend the opensports. if cost is no option white industries makes some sexy hubs

I recently built up a freewheel singlespeed using the stuff from this page:

Think it came out to 60-something shipped, and they come in a lot of colors. Pretty hubs. You can get it cheaper if you buy the spokes elsewhere, but not by much.

It's a pretty screaming deal on very solid quality stuff if you are building your first wheel.



The spacing is gonna be 120, but you can throw some washers in there.

Hi Jake - thanks for the ideas. I'm not familiar with the Deore hub (or freehubs for that matter). How do I run a single cog without it sliding around?
