Choices Choices.
This is one of the things I love about the quill stem. Simple, one-bolt removal with a clean aesthetic. Thus allowing me to change bars at my whim, aided by a hinged 'cross lever for less frustration. I think the horns are going to win me over for this week....seems to be a weekly flip/flop for me. Anyone else do this frequently? PDXers: When would you all like to (try) and get together again for a little jaunt? Last times attendance was more than dissappointing, however, still mighty fun. I am thinking any time next weekend will be good. Fenders may be needed. I'll keep ya posted. Start a new thread for "PDX" if you come up with times and or suggestions. -Pete |
That's not a bad Saturday evening at all. Mine consists of cabernet sauv and numerical differentiation and integration. Can we see other, better pics of your bike? Or shall we be teased by that swatch of grey?

Doesn't sound to bad either, although I never really liked calc when I took it - Linear algebra was what really got to me.
I will give you a few more teases of the grey, as I will have to wait until daylight to get a better pic of the whole rig. I have been holding myself back until I get the Paul's dropouts brazed into the back. Plus she is rather fendered up lately and not as sleek as she is in her summer dress. That Guchi of yours should be a beast when you are done. ITS STEEL too! I thought it looked like carbon. All the better man, and very good deal as well. -Pete |
the homework is for numerical analysis class -- like calc but we care about error in computation. I hate applied math.
Stumptown = Portland? Gainesville and Portland might as well be sister cities what with all the emigrants I've known. Nice ride and great photo (streaks.jpg). Can't wait to see the new dropouts. |
Nah, it actually isn't much of a choice for me. I thought it would be, but the first time I went back to drops after moving to the ol' drop-n-chop, I find that I just didn't like the ride as much. My rain ride has drops but when I get bored one day I may cut them down.
Yeah, Portland = Stumptown, a reference to its origins in the lumber industry. And my Saturday night consisted of staying home for what, so I could watch the Yankee trounce Boston and put us a game away from elimination? Different year, same .... :( |
...had my yankees hat on today...
PDX, Stumptown, P-town, Portland, they're all the same. This whole side of the country was once covered with old growth forests. Now it is inundated with suburbia, a lot of stumps were made in the process - thus the name. 'Twas all stumps at one point. |
I'm having a similar Saturday night. Woody Allen flick in the background, working on the fixed, drinking Sam Adam's. Good night. Go with the bullhorns!
|
Yeah, Boston got trounced. I looked at the screen while in the bar and winced. Not that I really care who won, but the score was just ugly.

Weird. My Saturday night consisted of getting some chrome road bars with a nice quill stem (and cool brake levers, should I ever have a use for them) for $5 (WorkingBikes), removing the tape and brake levers, polishing them up and putting them on the fixie, and taking it for a spin. I then ate veggie enchiladas and had a beer and watched Blue Velvet. It seems like fixie riders maybe have a deeper link than just the bikes they ride? |

Well, just went out and took some pix - was time to get some new ones anyway. Here are the new bars (I call them my "pseudopista" bars - all the chrome without the drop). They are pretty comfy - wider than my other set of road bars. Also pictured are my new eggbeater pedals - pretty cool so far, still getting used to them though.
|
excuse the ignorance, but could someone explain to me what a quill stem is exactly? is it just the normal, one bolt and a wedge style of stem?
|
Yeah, the "7" shape. I use the term "quill stem" because I believe it implies that I have a threaded headset as well, so people have a better idea of what I am talking about. I think there is more of an art to quill stems as well.

Me and wife went home to some friends, wives went horsebackriding me and my friend drank bear and messed with our bikes, me I finally finished the SS-racer, other work was servicing two headsets, rebuilding a mtb-wheel, and general polishing and lubricating, all together with Boddingtons bear and Ramones. It was a great saturday night.

My flipped bars for around the neighborhood upright cruising. With spray-painted super-long stem. I swap them out with my drops whenever I need to ride downtown.
|
Ugh. And that's actually comfortable? Why not actual cruiser bars or even a flat bar? For that matter, what's wrong with your drops that you don't have a comfortable position on them? They should be setup so that the dropped part is for pulling or more aero while the flats and sides offer a comfortable uprightish position.

Dis the aesthetics if you think they're ugly but don't jump all over my drops. |

Its an '89 Trek 400, all braze-ons have been torched and the frame recoated in grey primer. Been converted for about 2 1/2 years now, but I can't fit anything other than a 42 x 15 in the back as it is. I think it will be pretty swank with the Paul's dropouts in there. I have 3 mid-late eighties Treks. I love them all. -Pete |
