Help, with singlespeed chain tension

So i got a new rear rim, And i got the gearing down.

Now i have the chain its the gears, Its like 44 12 or something (Its a trailer puller)

My question is, Do i need to get a singlespeed conversion kit because right now the chain tension is spot on.

Its shifted up a gear twice and its pretty annoying.

If i get a singlespeed conversion kit it'll fix this problem correct?

How do i install one of these? Do i take apart my cluster, and then just shim it out for the drive line? Cause my driveline is also straight.

I was thinking of sanding down the ramps.. But no... i will not.

What's the wheel size?

If it's a 700c, isn't 96 gear inches a "bit" too big for pulling a trailer?

Regardless, that is a monstrous gearing even without a trailer.

The gear inch for my track bike is 87.6(50x15) And at the best situation with a 26x1.0 tire, the gearing inches is with a 44x12 is 87.9. 26 nominal is 95.1.

Chain tension wouldn't have all that much to do with it. It may look as if you have a good chainline, but the chain can be thrown off if the chainline is slightly off. I'd break the cassette apart and use the cog you want and spacers and get a tensioner.

hmm, So your saying it is ghost shifting cause my chain line is a little off? I'll Probally go to the bike shop and get them to do it...

I was thinking for now, Can i get something to block the ramps? Like tape or plastic?

How hard is it to remove the cassette and disect the cassete?

If you have a cass. with "ramps" on the cass cogs/"gears"... don't bother using them on the conversion.

Why? .. you ask .
Under heavy load, climbing or sprinting out of the saddle. The cog will "shift" the chain to the next gear... ( no matter what the chain tension ) and since there isnt one, the chain will drop.

Same for a derailer-less ( complete not dissasembled )cass ... but worse ! ( if you have old school horizontal dropout. "not a trak fork." See sheldon brown site if needed. )
Under load if you have ramps it will shift to the next larger cog ... and since, your chain will stay the same lengnt it will yank the wheel out of the drop out , right into the chain stay.

Sram seems to use tiny allen bolts that reach the smallest cog with the threaded holes, and some shimono uses rivets, the heads grind off real easy, just like mentioned above ...

.
.
.

quoted from other thread in bike mechs's thread,

Is this true?

its ghost shifting every now and then. Should i get a singlespeed cog also?

Rear cog on my dmr isn't a ss specific cog, and never really had that much of a problem. You can if you want, but you might need a chain and chainring as well depending on the chain stretch.

this doesn't seem safe....

I want to get a new derailer hanger because the derailer hanger is bent, Is there a chain tensioner that uses the chain stay? I've seen some.

Yeah, I wouldn't run that, I could just imagine what would happen if something stripped in a setup like that.

There is, but you're better off getting a new hanger. The stay mounted ones are worthless.

I cant find any hangers that fit. I have a raw aluminum 7005 al frame. i got it free...

I think its a diamondback hanger. I've seen these on universal cycling for 5 dollars.

Im ordering the conversion kit on Bikeisland for 22 dollars, And then im gunna look for a stay chain tensioner. or a new derailer hanger. if i can find one, I'll get the conversion kit at perfomance bikes it comes with a kit and derailer for 34 dollars..

I just went on a ride, It ghost shifted twice, Stretching my chain like crazy... new chain.... Whould i need a new 3/32 singlespeed chain?

The only time this has been an issue with me is with an imperfect chainline. Once I set it straight I can run cassette cogs no problem.

I don't bother with tensioners. I just find the magic ratio. It's free, and it results in a smoother, nicer looking drivetrain IMO.

Find the one that matches, get the hanger number and take it to a lbs. I'm guessing it's going to be hanger #27

So fast jake, If i get a perfect chain line right now on the cassette. Will it be ramping?

Is the ramping from the cog i have now or from the neghboring cogs?

Its hanger 48 https://wheelsmfg.com/content/view/590/27/

My hanger has the two round edges and the two holes. Will my lbs carry this? Or they can order it i should assume. Cause my school has some new rules witch doesnt allow me to lock my road bike up inside classrooms IE the band room's storage room. and i don't want to luck up my bike outside unless its a beater. IE this frame build.

If you get the proper tension and a semi straight chain line it should be fine. I've made numerous tall bike setup with terrible chain lines, but they all usually stay if you add some sort of tensioning device. You could try rigging something out of an old derailleur.
