cog and wheel

This is probably a dumb question, but when you order a rear wheel, say a velocity b43 or a weinmann attak deep v, do they come with a cog or do you have to buy that separately?

guitarmankyle 01-28-11 05:36 PM

depends on who you're buying it from

Leukybear 01-28-11 05:40 PM

Usually not... you might get a lockring though if the set is laced to formula.... but I would swap that cheap aluminum formula lockring for a proper machined steel dura ace one ASAP.

Scrodzilla 01-28-11 05:41 PM

If we're talking about the wheel you're having built by Bell's Bike Shop, you'll need to purchase a cog and lockring separately.

thats the one i was talking about lol thanks!

whitey4521 01-28-11 08:04 PM

is there a big difference between a regular one and a dura ace one?

yummygooey 01-28-11 08:31 PM

Formula lockrings are fine, but nothing special. I had one. It was very light and felt super flimsy compared to the Dura Ace one I now have, but it did its job ok.

Dura Ace is steel, Formula is aluminium. In this case, steel is definitely real.

Not trying to Hijack the thread, but I am considering a Cog (preferibly 17t), Should I go with the All City, Miche setup, or splurge for the Sugino set and never worry again?

buy the best you can afford, always

Miche set up is good if you change your ratio a lot, besides that, Dura Ace, EAI, All-City, EighthInch, Soma, IRO, Surly, Origin8 are just as good.

you put soma twice, but yes, that is a good list.

that and phil wood cogs.

but your wallet hates phil wood as a whole.

Squirrelli 01-28-11 11:52 PM

Oops, I meant Surly.

I don't think Phil or EAI Gold Medal cogs are worth the premium.

Vixtor, is there a thread around here about it?

+1; I'm a victim here; I have 4 phil cogs....

whitey4521 01-29-11 05:31 AM

i currently have a 46t crank and a 15t cog, origin 8 crank and not sure what my cog is but im thinking about switching to a 16t cog...does that change my gear ratio much? sorry im a newb

yummygooey 01-29-11 09:32 AM

Eighth Inch and All City are the same cogs, but the Eighth Inch has the black coating on it. I think Alien also uses the same cogs, as many other companies probably do. I run an Eighth Inch and I like it, but the black coating doesn't really do anything because it wears off fairly quickly where the chain contacts the teeth.

What kind of terrain do you run in? Do you use your bike as a commuter or for longer rides?

whitey4521 01-29-11 03:44 PM

Pretty much flat terrain, i use it as a commuter bike the furthest i have gone is 10 miles or so
