Something skipped when i started at a light
 

Good morning fellas!

I got a 57cm Kilo TT 47x16, roughly 400km on the kmc chain. Dura-ace cog, so its stupid strong and 151 bcd super mighty sugino chainring.

When i took off from the light this morning it felt like something skipped. It felt like the tooth broke or the chain jumped? Chain is kinda loose, but it never gave me any kind of problems like that before. I pulled over and quickly inspected everything and didnt fing a problem.

Im just trying to see if someone had a similar problem or knows what it might be. Im at work till 5 and i work in the office. Were having a snow storm coming in (30 cm of snow) so i just wanna make sure i can make it home safley.

Ofcourse ill tear it apart and inspect everything when i get home, just wanna make sure it will make it home.

The rest of the way to the office(4km) it felt fine.

Was it wet outside?
I know sometimes when pushing from a stop on wet pavement, the rear wheel will kind of spin over the pavement before catching.

Did you check if your locking is tight? I had a similar experience and turned out my locking was loose.

also make sure your rear wheel didn't slip in the dropout. And I second the lockring/cog. But basically go thru the drivetrain and check torque from wheel to crank.

99% of the time when someone asks this question on BF, their lockring was loose. This allows the cog to spin backwards when you slow down, then when you start up again it retightens, and you feel your cranks slip a quarter of a turn.

If you have a brake, it is perfectly safe to ride, just avoid any backpedalling until you can have the lockring and cog properly tightened. If you are brakeless, then do not ride it. You could strip your hub or much, much worse.

+1. My power legs caused my wheel to slip yesterday. May be have been my weak arms while torquing the nuts, on the other hand.

I've never had it happen from a stop but I have had my chain skip from the chainstays flexing when bouncing the rear of the bike around skipping.

If you were starting from an uphill and just really layed into it I could imagine the same thing happening.

My brother was having this problem on his pista. I took it into an lbs my friend works at to have them tighten the lockring. He tells me its happening again, so I'm assuming something is stripped :/

I have experienced the loose lock ring problem before.. And last time i make sure it was nice and tight.

What happened today felt different from my cranks just moving forward a quarter turn. And there actually was a "bang" when it skipped forward. It felt like a tooth broke off or the chain jumped(its a little loose, but not that loose).

May be it was the wheel moving forward in the drop out. Ill check after work.

It's entirely possible that your clutch is slipping.

Next time before throttling it too hard, make sure your clutch has pressure or the flywheel will chatter.

Idk, Could be you lockring.

just take rim off and check the cog/lockring take them both off, inspect threads. Put them back on correctly and you should be good to go.

If you have a lot of saddle to bar drop and are out of the saddle, it's not impossible to have the rear wheel slip while torquing down. I've had that happen.

Chainring bolts loose? I once had 3 of 5 of mine loosen without noticing. While taking off from a stop, the ring shifted on the spider. I ended up having to replace a couple of them.

i have had the exact same thing happen on my singlespeeds.

i'll be at a light and startup and... BANG!!! it feels like by chain might have snapped or like you said, broke a tooth...

i've decided that it is possible that the one of the chain sideplates has gotten caught on the tooth just a little and snaps back into line from the pressure of the startup. possibly as a result of a too loose chain or a bad chainline or maybe even leaning the bike over while resting as the light.

Singlespeed? Probably your freewheel slipping. I'd lube or replace the freewheel.
