I picked up a Shimano STX mtb triple crankset for my SS project. I really only bought it for the crankarms, but if I can use the large chain ring that'd make things easy. The question is, there's a sticker on the chainring that says "IG Chian ONLY", now I assume that's because of how the chainring is ramped and pinned. Now I plan to remove the two smaller chainrings and do whatever with them, but are the ramps and pins going to 'cause a problem for me?

This is my first SS project and the bike is for my g/f who really doesn't ride (I figure if i build her a nice, simple bike I can at least get her to go around the block with me).

On my mono chainring mtb I run a non ramped round ring, no teeth filing for chain lift.

Ramped rings I've seen are thinner, and have teeth angled for chain shift as well as pins.

If the teeth ARE all lined with no lower peaks, (rings vary a lot) I guess. For a liesure around bike yes.
You can snap rings under high torque (cheapo.) My ring is mm thicker than a normal mtb ring. DH and BMX use thicker rings.

IG means 7-8 spd chain, HG is 9 spd**********???? If so, it's better thicker, running IG I think.

Oh, mount the ring middle on the spyder, you'll need bmx\ single plate bolts.

My Blackspire Epic ring 38T, was 34$? with tax. Buck a tooth for rings.

Asked a friend, correct on the HG, IG.

Was not sure as my 7 spd had HG big ring, some chains run better with the gap.

I ran a Lx 32 for a season amd had no problems and was using a Sram s/s chain JJ

yeah, the STX chainring has varied tooth peaks as well as ramps. I'm finding it difficults to find unmolested chainrings for 94BCD. I forgot that BMX was 110 BCD when buying these, D'oh!

you can get non-ramped salsa rings in 94mm BCD from bikeman.com for surprisingly cheap.

before i got my 32 tooth 94mmBCD salsa ring i used a ramped and pinned chainring for a long time without any problems.

I'm using a ramped 32T 94mm BCD chainring as well on my SS Kona Lavadome MTB. Haven't had any problems. I also use a cheapo Bell-packaged KMC BMX chain from Walmart too.

I used a ramped 36 for a while, the non ramp 'feels' better. Some mid ramp rings are lighter guage Alu than the big, the small on the triple is often steel. I swear I could feel it flex, also, a mono ring gets constant use, needs to be a HQ alloy, well shaped teeth.

IMO, all that jazz.

Thanks for the tips guys. Jeff is right, when I took the arms off I tried flexing the rings in my hands and it was WAY easy. I found on Nashbar a Ritchey T-6061 Alu. ring for only $7! The showed reg. price being $40! I ordered one up pronto. If anyone else is looking for one, check out the Nasbar website.

I've never seen Ritchey rings, I ride a R frameworks tho- He's got the scooby on good metals\ components. A good choice probably.

Ring sandwiching is a good idea, to eliminate the poss' of chainjump. Easy on a triple.
