wear your helmet!

I was hit by a Jeep Wranger about 15 min ago when I was bicycling to home.
seems my bicycles helmet saved me...

I am unbelievably fine and my bicycles is also fine.

have safe riding.. all..

Glad to hear you're OK and that the helmet helped. But remember that a bit more speed or force from that Jeep could have rendered the helmet pointless.

Glad you're ok!

I was hit by a Ford Escape this past Monday. Like you, my bike and I were unharmed. Well, my left side where i took the impact was pretty bruised up, a little blood, and I was sore a few days. But its better than broken bones / death. Again, glad to hear you're ok!

.... so no point wearing a helmet? Helmets have saved my life more times than I can count - Never leave home without it myself!

My apologies - that was not the point I was trying to make. What I'm trying to say is that there are definitely instances where helmets save lives. Then again, there are some instance (e.g. being run over, or being hit with excessive force) where the helmet simply won't help. That said, I wear the helmet and be vigilant.

Good thing the Jeep wasn't going any faster then, huh. If you really want to incite helmet flame wars, go read Advocacy & Safety. Or look at the old helmet debate threads on SSFG even.

My helmet exploded when I was rear ended 2 years ago. My scalp needed stapling but my amazingly thick skull stayed in one piece. I thank my superior genetics

thisisbenji 02-09-11 06:20 PM

I used to wear my helmet all the time, but with it being so cold out I opt for a hat instead.

If some of the people repeated their arguments about how helmets make cycling less safe to real human beings, they would be laughed at. I was trying to explain the argument of reduced safety due to helmet usage to my wife and I was having a hard time putting it into words.

If you get sucked into a jet engine, a bicycle helmet isn't going to do much good. But that's not the point.

Glad you didn't get hurt brah.

I have a winter helmet. Size L with no pads. Fits over a toque just right.

In the grand scheme of things I only wear a helmet about 20% of the time. If I ever get off my ass and start racing again, percentage might go up.

Lemme guess.... didn't file a report?

HandsomeRyan 02-10-11 01:50 AM

Helmets can not prevent or even significantly reduce the danger that swarms of killer bees pose to cyclists.

/srsly though, glad you are okay.

Awesome, now helmets protect from broken bones too? Are they still sold in bike shops or do I have to check in magic supply stores?

cheungupdt 02-10-11 04:14 AM

i was biking earlier, around 15mph. My front wheel got stuck into the rail road track, and i flew off my bike. My helmet cracked and i still wounded my face at a spot right next to my eyes with a 1.5in diameter wound. Thank God that nothing is too badly wounded. I got a 5in diameter bruise on my thigh and many scratch throughout my left thigh. I can't image what would happen if i didn't have my helmet on. I'm still on the process of recovering. Helmets save lifes!

BTW, the helmet probably protected the bike as well, =P cause it didn't received too much damage, and it is mostly fine after the accident.

How the **** are you guys always getting hit by cars?

pastoryusuk 02-10-11 01:13 PM

I collided with a car at top speed (the car was going slow, lucky) head on when I was a kid. I had no helmet and almost died. Head trauma sucks, I'm still feeling the effects of it (my memory now sucks...). A bit of coolness/comfort is not worth it. Wear a helmet.

Helmet saved my life today. I was going over a railroad track and there was a huge lip on it that grabbed my tire and threw me off the bike so fast that I didn't know what happened. I just remember a super load crack of the back of my head slamming the road and my body skimming across it. I got real lucky there were no cars behind me, and I got off to median in the road and checked myself out. I think I landed right on top of my head because my neck hurts like hell when I turn it too far. Got some weird headaches and my entire side of my torso is road rash.

Took off my helmet and realized it saved me from a coma or death. There is no way around it. I rode home and have not really absorbed the whole thing, but you need to buy a helmet and wear one...trust me.
