clipless?
Bringing my singlespeed home this summer and I plain on using it for cross training. I was wondering if its worth getting a set of clipless pedals or should I stick to the straps and clips. I also need a pair of bullhorns and a front brake if someone wants to help a poor college kid out :D

Definitely get clipless if you're doing it for cross training, learn to mount, dismount, hopping..etc.

Have you fallen over when you're track standing at a light? |
Sadly, yes.
I am so afraid to trackstand clipped in now. And I used to do it at lights all the time with pedals/straps because I knew I could bail quickly. Now, I just feel like my foot will not unclipped fast enough. |
I find it easier to unclip from eggbeaters than to get out of a strap. Especially because you can twist your foot both directions to unclip.

If you are strapped in, especially with a cleated shoe, then you can't get out without reaching down and releasing the straps.
|
Regular clips and straps with street shoes are more difficult to get out of than clipless pedals.
|
Somebody really needs to write a tutorial/FAQ/bible/koran/wiki about clipless pedals and get it over with. This comes up every week now and it's not gonna stop anytime soon as more and more SSFG people are using clipless.

its cross training not training for cross. I run track during the year and need to stay in shape while minimizing impact during the summer. I was just wondering if anyone had cheap parts to sell, I'm not looking for handouts.

Check your local craigslist and any local fixed gear message boards (if there are any). You may find decent pedals and bars and all that stuff. Shoes might be harder to find but you can check PricePoint (shoes+pedal combos), REI, and Performance for something not too expensive

anyone try out eggbeater smarty pedals?
|
Unclipping is easier than unstrapping in my opinion. If the spring tension in the pedals is set low enough, many pedals will release in the event of panicking and ripping your feet away from the pedal.
