PLEASE HELP: new stem, hard time skidding

I recently picked up the Eighth Inch BMX/freestyle stem. My bikes not "trick track" at all, but I wanted something a lot shorter than what I had and a different position. I think BMX stems and short reach stems on track bikes look really sweet so I bought it... but I'm having a REALLY rough time skidding with it. Every time I go to skid my leg somehow ends up getting bruised up pretty badly and I almost flew off the bars the other day. This is really disappointing because I love the position and the way the stem looks but if I'm not going to be able to skid on it then I'm not sure why I'd keep it. Would going from a 100mm stem to a 50mm affect skid stopping in any way? Should I switch up my ratio? I'm currently running a 46t in the front and a 15 or 14t in the back, it's always been fairly hard to skid and trick. Please help!!

I only have one spacer on my fork but I have room to fit two more if that helps. Should I raise the bars as well?

Or you can practice skidding

Buy a big wheel. They are easier to do skidz.

I had skidding down perfect with my other 100mm stem which is why I'm pissed.

a shorter stem will give you less leverage to lean forward on.

A lower gear ratio will make it much easier to skid. But really, this is the best advice:

...maybe you should change back stems.

erpdat 02-16-11 06:04 PM

Uhh dude. Going from 100mm to 50mm is stupid. Srsly?

Scrodzilla 02-16-11 06:09 PM

The reason you're having such trouble is because YOUR STEM IS WAY TOO DAMN SHORT.

It seems ironic that someone who always advocates brakes doesn't have a brake on his own bike.

I just had some steamed carrots and broccoli, awesome.

Scrodzilla 02-16-11 06:48 PM

I've got Teriyaki steak tips, baked potatoes and asparagus on the grill.

rustybrown 02-16-11 06:53 PM

Can of field peas, here. And coerced myself into a handful of nuts.

I would recommend trying harder. Or not bother skidding just for the sake of skidding. It's not a trick.

Auntjamaemae 02-16-11 07:49 PM

skidding is fun so i can understand why your upset, it seems odd that a shorter stem is making it harder, i tend to lock my left leg under my handle bars so having the bars as close as possible is what i want. are you using cages?

i would like to run a poll someday to find out if there is a correlation, riders who cant skid/ track stand and riders who run their mouths about how dumb it is.

Uh, guys...this is a food thread now in case you hadn't noticed.

I've a lamb chop marinating in red wine and Worcestershire. Pinto beans on the stove. Will be starting the rice up when the beans are about a half hour out.

Merlot and baguette dipped in olive oil, basalmic and gorgonzola for apps.

Scrodzilla 02-16-11 08:27 PM

See? Now we're talking.

I'm going to stir fry a load of veggies tonight. This morning I steamed a cup of short grain rice, fried two eggs and a quarter of an onion, then I mixed it all in a bowl with soy sauce, sesame seeds, and seaweed flakes. Breakfast of champions
