getting a wheel built, need help choosing hubs
 

I don't want some super low end hubs like quandos but I don't think I can afford the higher end dura ace type stuff.. anyone know of any decent hubs I can order that will last a long time and ride smooth?
my current wheels are 27inchers from my old 80's roadbike and the hubs are dreadful. I want some hubs that might improve my speed or might help me not get worn out as quick on sprints, if the old hubs are doing that.. i hope that makes sense to u guys >.<

miche, formulas, novatec are all solid choices, but you would be better off getting a prebuilt wheel that having one handlaced if youre going to use basic hubs.

^This - unless you want experience building them yourself. It never hurts to know how to build wheels.

I'd love to build them but I don't think I would.
problem is I already have the rims. I might just try to save up for some better hubs. what are some better hubs and their prices?

Having them built (and not doing it yourself) is only going to add cost. Maybe sell the rims and buy complete wheels?

Formulas are great hubs, in my experience.

The IRO ones look nice, too, but it looks like they're out of stock.

well lets say I have a wheel building friend that can either do it for me or teach me if he has the time. what kinda hubs could I get in the mid to higher end?

Novatec track hubs are good bang for the buck. They're unbranded All-city track hubs and can be found at a decent price.

thanks scrod. I might go with those. or some Miche primato hubs if I feel like saving up some extra cash for em. have u had experience with them?

Assuming your bike takes 120mm rear and 100mm front check out Milwaukee Bicycle Co 4 Star hubs.

I"ve built two sets of wheels with them and think they're excellent. Very smooth, good looking and under $100 for a pair.

Did you repack them? What exactly is wrong with them? The only time a hub is really shot is when it wasn't maintained and the cups are pitted.

Formulas are good and reasonably priced.

Lacing a wheel is not the hard part, truing and tensioning is.

As for hubs, I am extremely extremely content with my Novatec road front and my Formula back hub combo. Though, I would love my Formula rear if it was a fixed/fixed.

All-City New Sheriff hubs are very nice as well.
