hi!

so beyond velocity deep v's and various mavics my wheelset knowledge is limited.

i recently purchased a bianchi pista concept frameset from a friend.

not in a rush at all to build it up, so was just curious if someone with a larger knowledge base could help me out....

any advice on a light wheelset?

price range? not really set.
lets just say it is the lightest frameset ive ever had and feel like waiting for the right wheels to go on it. Think such a light frame deserves a light wheelset....

and i guess my knowledge of "light" wheelsets are limited to using the search word "carbon" on ebay and names like zipp.

i guess im just wondering if there are wheelsets out there im just not familiar with that provide a happy balance between quality and lightness, and well, price.

what am i using this bike for? well im definitely entertaining the thoughts of driving an hour + to actually try riding on a track @ the hellyer in san jose once a month or so. admittedly i dont know much about velodromes besides what i read on blogs, but after riding fixed gear for a few years the prospect of riding around in circles really fast sounds appealing.

im not going to lie, ill probably take it out on the commute ride too.

um so yah, any help is appreciated. except for maybe a "let me google that for you" lol

Clincher or tubular? And you need to give some guidance about price. Some people don't blink at dropping $2k for a set of Zipps, others think $500 is way too much.

Sapim C-Xray spokes: nothing lighter or stronger.

Velocity Aerohead rims at 425 grams: light and strong with 32 spokes.

Deep V's bring nothing to the equation but more weight.

Aeroheads equal strong, light and aerodynamic.

Dura Ace represents the lightest and smoothest hub for this application, but, if color matters, you can get Phils for only a slight weight penalty and additional cost.

Cost for custom build with Phil hubs about $800.

I ride this wheel myself on the street, and I have weighed as much as 235lbs.

Light and bulletproof.

can anyone give me a super rough breakdown of wheelset weight?

like, what range would be considered light.....super light?
or say, what the weight of a standard velocity deep v to formula wheelset is?
(that is a weight that is tangible to me to compare to)
at what point would you consider a wheelset heavy?

and sorry for spamming you instead of doing my own thorough research lol (cant hurt to ask here i guess since allot of you seem very knowledgeable)

oh and thanks for previously posted advice. it seems like building wheels is one way to go? ive never built a wheel before but i do have a somewhat budget truing stand for truing wheels, which ive started to grasp recently....

ill definitely just troll ebay for a while and see what pops up used as well...

You probably don't need a front track hub, depending on your weight and the condition of the streets where you ride of course. 32 or even 28 spokes is way overkill for someone like me @ ~150lbs. My old road bike has 18f/20r and I rode it for a decade without ever having to true a wheel. While I realize that's not the norm, I do think a 20 or 24 spoke front is plenty beefy for most people. Here's what I'd do in your shoes...

Kinlin 27mm rims (Kinlin=IRD)
28 hole DA low flange rear hub
24 hole Ultegra road front hub (lighter and cheaper than DA track hub)
Sapim CX Ray spokes (2 cross front and rear)
brass nipples

How about a Reynolds Recon wheelset? They are pretty light overall(1740g), but whats even more important is that they are a full carbon clincher so they have an extremely light rotational weight. The weight of the rim matters much more than the weight of the hubs. You can't beat the price of them as well. I recently picked up a set for $340 + shipping on eBay. Also, if you are going with a light weight wheeleset don't forget to go with an equally light tire/tube combo.

For the street, anything under 1700g for front and rear together.

I ride Phil hubs, Sapim CX-Ray spokes and Velocity Aerohead rims for a total of 1650 grams; a strong real-world wheel set.

Some of the wheels described by other forumites in this thread weigh well in excess of 1700 grams, despite the claim of the poster.

Dura Ace hubs, Sapim CX-Ray spokes with DT-Swiss RR 1.1 rims comes in at 1574 grams; at my present weight, 200lbs, I would not ride anything lighter on the street.

Mihlbach has a wheel build that weighs less, costs less, and with which he has street experience.

Perhaps he'll contribute to this thread.

Money is the only thing holding me back right now. I could buy them right now but i'm trying to exercise some restraint and not blow all my money at once. If I'm good I'll get the hubs in the next couple months and go from there. I should have my bike rolling by the weekend though. Can't wait.
