Gear ratio?
 

So I turned an old Peugeot bike into a fixed gear. My front cranks are 41 and 52, my rear cog is 18. I decided that instead of buying a whole new crank I can just save money and replace the fixed cog. I bought a 14T. Will using the 41/14 ratio be easier to commute on? This is the main reason I did this.

where are you from? Also you can use this http://software.bareknucklebrigade.c...it.applet.html to figure out your ratio and compare to others. To get an exact ratio you need chainring, crank length, cog, wheel size, and tire size.

sounds like you would have a ratio of 2.9 or 79.1 gear inches. I assumed you had 170mm cranks and 27" wheels. I am running about a 2.6 ratio and 69 gear inches. I live in the Seattle, WA area and some hills with my ratio are pretty dang tough. Funny thing is that both set ups that you could use are the same ratio. 52/18 and 41/14 are both 2.9 ratio!

Anyway I would put it on there but save the amount of chain you take off. If you want to go up to a bigger cog in the back then you can lengthen the chain if needed. You can always take cogs off and swap them out so no reason to not just try it out!

I run 82.9 gear inches. 52 to 17, 170mm cranks and 27x1.25 tires. Everywhere I need to go is level with where I live so it makes a really fast commuter/errands bike. Running this high of gear inches makes slowing down a little more work because you typically go faster and also it takes more back pressure to slow down. Also, as Motopecane mentioned if you have a lot of hills you'll wanna go with something smaller.
