Fender love! @ ImChris!
Because it's fun. I know thats subjective, but if you want an objective reason for someone doing something that is a matter of taste you're not going to get it.

Also, there's no hostility. It's a back and forth discussion.

I sold my '86 Centurion Conversion to a friend of mine today. We went for a brief ride so I could adjust it for him (saddle, stem, seatpost, etc.). He was curious about my Team Track and why I bought a new bike when I had the pretty nice conversion. I told him:

-It's less comfortable
-It's more fragile
-I'm a geek and it makes me happy.

I ride RB-021's. Over the presidents day weekend I did ~150 +/- trying to ride my bike out to Salton Sea.
Some people hate the way they feel. I personally had no complaints about them and I was on my bike for about 25 hours with only rest breaks. I hate drops. Can't do it. Even on the drops of the RB's I can feel my chest being compressed.
It's what

Then why ride a bike that perpetuates this riding position?

This loops back to my original question. Unless everyone posting here is a human Gumby doll a track style riding position holds no advantage. Lets take the numbered approach.
1. Traffic: While the twitchy nature of a track bikes geo lends some assistance in maneuvering in traffic, navigating intersections and being generally aware of your surroundings clearly suffer with your head buried 3/4 of the way to the stem.
2. Uneven roads: Product of americas slowly crumbling infrastructure a stiff frame with a narrow wheel base is far from the correct tool for the job. The beating that your lower back, arms, and shoulders take as your bike rattles and bounces along cannot be denied.

Like Freestyle how is this not trying to fell a redwood with a dull hacksaw?

Form over function -- it's not how it works, it's how it looks that matters.

Duh.

My bike has road geometry. But keep assuming we are all riding heavily track oriented geomtry on the streets. Did you notice I said I can "Feel" my chest being compressed?
RB-021's provide about as much drop as I'm able to use comfortably.

If I considered my bike a torture rack there would be something wrong with it. Which I suppose means I shouldn't have replied to this thread in the first place.

If you had it all your way we'd all be riding and not going faster then 12 miles an hour.

I agree... not saying that you're not a man doing a press machine like that. But a true barbell squat is much better IMO. I went on the stronglifts 5x5 program and I've pretty much hit the target of lifting 1.5x body weight.

id say the target is 1.5 times body weight only if front squatting, and im sure carleton is well past that. back squat should much higher than that.

In the beginners stronglifts 5x5 program 1.5 x body weight is the target for the back squat, the core lift of the program. Carleton may be lifting more than 1.5 x, I don't know... I think I saw him mention in another post his BW is over 200lbs, so he's a big guy, I'm sure he's strong. I'm smaller in comparison, but I can lift the 1.5x body weight. I've actually started doing some higher reps at lower weight to raise my heart rate a bit more, as my legs are getting too big for my height/size

nice, i was just talking about a general goal as youll be squatting two times plus soon enough. try front squats and dead lifts too.

also, an elevated number of reps could be more hypertrophic and exacerbate that problem.

i do not have the dicipline for going to the gym. probably why i have a disproportionate body[big legs, girl torso/shoulders/arms] oddly my right forearm is extremely powerful.

i ride a pretty aggressive saddle-to-bar drop... b17 to pursuit (rb-021ish) and a jaguar for reference
i put in pretty decent miles, although my labor-intensive job inhibits putting in more.
i enjoy the aggressive stance, and i enjoy being able to push myself and feel like i'm in an optimal riding position to do so.

yeah, it's been feeling better, haven't had that knee discomfort in the last two days or so, I'll probably train on tuesday and go heavy again. We'll see. I may have to start doing front squats, I already do some deadlifts too, but I should probably do more

think the op is referring to people having really aggressive setups or no apparant reason....people who'll have a long ass drop stem with track bars and a frame thats a tad small....and this is people who just doodle around town...just because they like how it looks....I have friends who do this....its dumb

Nothing like alot of bar to saddle drop with a saddle designed for upright riding..
