The Tire Thread! for all the tire ?uestions
If there is already something like this then delete this.
If not, then come one come all to ask what ever there is to know about tires and ?uestions you may have about them.
So what's the difference from 700x23-28's and all that? They are just numbers to me so I was wondering what it was all about.
Plus, I was curious about brands. I am hearing a lot of talk about Gatorskins, whats the deal with them? Cause i am starting to be in need of a new back tire(darn that skidding). I don't really know what kind of tires i have(never really bothered to read the side of them for I don't know what reason) but as far as I know, I went to the LBS and bought some cheap tires (I think $20 or so). I am pretty sure they are just a cheap brand so i was wondering about getting new tires. Any help?

Many riders here use different tires for different scenarios. Many riders started using 28's in the rear. One tire in particular the vittoria randonneur is pretty common. This tire holds up very well to skids. Before the wire mesh shows you have a reddish anti-flat protection layer to skid through as well. This tire costs about $32 shipped from most online shops.
Gatorskins are nice, but I wouldn't waste a $50 tire on skidding.

I just started using panaracers. they held up all winter thus far and the tread still looks new . I even got a slash from a broken bottle in it and didn't get a flat, all I had to do to fix it was put some self vulcanizing fluid inside the slash and it was like having a brand new tire..

To answer the question "So what's the difference from 700x23-28's and all that? They are just numbers to me so I was wondering what it was all about."
700(c) is a French tire designation for a tire that fits rims with bead seat diameter of 622mm. This is pretty much the standard tire size for road bikes. The second number is the nominal width of the tire in millimeters. Wider tires offer a smoother ride at the expense of a small amount of weight and a lot of street cred. Narrower tires are meant to offer lower rolling resistance and be "faster" although some people are questioning that "wisdom".
