Switching out hubs?
 

Okay so i have a average velocity wheelset with formula hubs. I was wondering if i could switch out the hubs with some iro cycle hubs. Could i just take apart the wheels rebuild them up, does any one know if the hub flanges differ?
Ps. if your wondering the reason i'm doing this is because i'm getting my bike powder coated metalic blue so i wanted to coordinate stuff ya know.

They're both Formula hubs and have the same dimensions.

if you change your hubs, theres a risk of ruining your wheels up. i wouldnt do it, its just hubs.

Building wheels isn't rocket science. Just make sure you're prepared and have all the right tools before you attempt it.

Sorry Scrod, but this advice is dumb IMO. The guy is asking about swapping one cheap pair of hubs for another almost identical cheap pair of hubs so he can color coordinate? Seriously? Its pretty obvious from the question that the OP isn't anywhere being prepared to do it anyway.

OP...the best advice I can think of is to just ride your bike and stop looking at it.

If you plan on having the wheels built at a shop,you'll need new spokes as all shops i know refuse to re-use old ones.They will also not disassemble the wheel, but simply cut the spokes.

x2. Changing a car's oil isn't rocket science either, but there are a LOT of people who are just better off having it done for them. It can be dangerous to overestimate the average person's mechanical sensibility.

I think he should do it. Sure it's a lateral move but it's only $40 to get a hubset from IRO now. Since the dimensions of the hubs are the same, he could just reuse the spokes and nipples. Then he can sell the Formulas on CL or whatever for $40 or something.

He can learn to build a set of wheel for free basically.

However, if you do not have patient, then just GTFO.

See...that's the thing. If you genuinely want to learn wheel building and buy or borrow the tools to do the job right, go for it. If you just want to swap out hubs so they match your new paintjob and nothing more, don't bother.

I'll calmly wait for the "how do you true wheels and/or I broke a spoke" thread.

Don't worry i know to true a wheel and i have all the tools needed to build one, i thought the iro hubs were beter that formulas?I rember somewhere hearing they are simalar to gran coupes?

If you have the patient and truing stand/spoke keys/tension meter, I would suggest you try to unlace your wheel the relace it. Wheel building is a fun process and I think you would benefit from it if you know how to do it.

You can do it. Don't listen to the naysayers. Loosen the spokes a little at a time so you keep even tension around the rim until everything is loose. Keep track of the position of the spokes in relation to both the rim and the hub so the spokes are installed in the same relatonship on the new hub. If the wheel is dished, you'll have 4 sets of spokes. Left-inside, left-outside, right-inside, right-outside. Just do one wheel at a time, so you can refer to the other wheel for referance.
