side pull vs center pull, long reach on a SS
I am putting front and rear brakes on my peugeot rebuild, which came with 27" wheels, but is being converted to 700cc for cost reasons, and future use (new frame)
my question is, is side pull or dual pivot better than a center pull in my situation? what should i look for on my frame? i like the look of the center pulls, kind of old school. http://www.universalcycles.com/shopp...ls.php?id=9533 but these others are also nice looking and i hear they perform better, http://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKTK_S...ls&ProdID=1400 im just using this bike as a commuter beer getter. also, is one easer to adjust / maintain than the other? Dual pivot side pull are no brainers to adjust, centerpull are just a little trickier. You have to check if your frame has the cable guide for the center pull

yeah i do, i just took off the old ones. im betting ill go with center pull. they're classy.

Why do you want to replace your old center pulls with new ones?Unless there's something wrong with them, get new pads, clean 'em up a bit and be done.Rather than dumping money into a new set that performs the same as the old one, invest a few bucks into cablehangers with quick release.Makes wheel removal a lot easier.

Next weekend project. Polish cable hangar on the beater.
And cranks. It's been a while since it's seen some love. That photo is pure motivation. For beater bikes, OP, if it ain't broke...altruism, parable, yada yada yada. http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/...-9Commuter.jpg My Peugeot commuter beer getter beater. Yay! Peugeot Love! |
The brakes that came stock with my U08 are phenomenal - the center pull. Never a problem and they can stop on a dime.
However, my frankencycle features a side pull brake and it get's kind of screwy from time to time. +1 for the brake lever. Those are my favorite. |

A little Mother's Mag polish goes a long way to making the aluminum brakes shine. I cleaned up the Weinmann center pulls on my '71 Schwinn and they look just fine and work well on 700c wheels with plenty of reach.

If you can find a pair of gently used Mafac Racers around, take those over the Dia-Compes.
