I like this one: "As soon as I started braking at the uphill my frame snapped and I went flying into the woods.". Yeah cause I always start braking at the uphill to reduce momentum. I call BS.

they build F1 cars and fighter jets out of carbon fiber, so i think the material certainly can have strength and fatigue resistance sufficient for a bicycle application.
but it's not really about the material of course, it's about the design and execution. you can build bikes/parts that will break out of steel/aluminum/ti/whatever just as easily as you can carbon, but with good engineering and construction any of these materials should perform well.
specifically carbon cranks? imho, no worries. there are an awful lot of them out there these days, and it has trickled down to a pretty aggressive price point...which means they have pretty much mastered it. use a name-brand and don't think about it again (the generic ebay asian stuff is probably fine too, but you're looking for reassurance...)
i hear the same carbon phobia sometimes, and dismiss it. you can find broken pics of anything. i've ridden the same (reynolds) carbon fork for at least a decade now, and have 10s of 1000s of miles on various carbon rims/cranks/bars/posts/frames without a single issue. oh, and i have been *seriously* off-road in my 4x4 SUV...that happens to have a composite driveshaft.

"Carbon Fiber is Expensive" is another myth that needs to be dispelled.
Carbon Fiber USED to be expensive when it was a custom or almost custom process that required special facilities and skilled labor. Now, it's not the case. You can go to ebay (or a bike shop) and find moderately priced carbon fiber frames or complete bikes. CF accessories are super cheap. Yes, some companies will sell a CF bottle holder for $50...but you can find one for $10, too. A new Planet X CF frame/fork/seatpost is $800. New Carbon Fiber handlebars can be found on Ebay for $50. New CF stems for $20.
A CF bike won't shatter if you drop something on it. I bang up my bike all the time.
Stop with the myths.

Lie. This mythical, fantastic "Calfee" company does not exist. It's just a part of your imagination.
In the meantime, I will put on the set of steel cranks I acquired from the shopping bag lady who lives in an abandoned Chevrolet in the alley.
STEEL IS OBVIOUSLY REAL.

well i do appreciate all of your view points and consideration into this topic, but i think i'm gonna skip out of the carbon. i'm just too afraid of it breaking, and that's money i can't afford to be out. i think what i'm gonna get is a sugino 75. i figure that's a hard one to argue with.
also anyone know anything about: https://www.jensonusa.com/store/produ...m+Bracket.aspx
I'm probably gonna make an independent thread about that also though

I don't care if you get carbon cranks or not, but I just don't want you to have an unfounded fear of buying something in which you were interested.

Uh, yeah... No offense, but I am certain you do not make anywhere near the power of the pro peloton when climbing a hill on your fixie... Basically, I am certain you are not producing 2,400+ watts.

i'm just most worried about stopping. i'm more than confident in the strength of a carbon fiber cranks while pedaling and normal riding. but like when i'm stopping and slowing down. i mean i have strong enough legs to stop my wheel on a dime without skid stopping. i mean i do powerlifting i got some strong ass legs.
