Best value clips/straps
I'm looking to build a 2nd bike to have as a back-up, and I want to spend about $300 and buy most of the parts used. Does anybody know a good brand of clips or straps? I need ones that will hold up well, since I'll be riding brakeless.

Wig or Holdfast.
If you go toe clips get metal and run double straps. Toshis or something similar. |
-scrod's straps if youre into that style
-mks single clips/straps -all city metal clips/leather straps (a bit more) -full on toshi's and the jizz. or give clipless a try. best 150$ i've ever spent. |
Being a non-fixed gear rider can you go clipless and still be able to brake with enough force?
If so then screw Toshis and get shoes and clips. |
Toshis are going to take up like 20% of your budget. If you won't go clipless and are anal about foot retention, with your budget i'd stick to nylon. If maximum foot retention is not super important then go for cheap leather doubles (Origin 8s or All City's or something).

Holdfast makes great straps! If you are on a real budget go for retrogression straps. I always find it hard to stop with normal clips and straps. Go clipless if you are going longer distances.

^ this...just got them they are great

You can get MKS single clips and generic leather straps for ~$15 shipped on eBay. They certainly aren't the best, but they'll get the job done on the cheap.
|
Clips & cages = toshi doubles; sure expensive but they last nearly forever and why compromise when foot retention is so important for fixed?
Straps = scrod's retrogression straps. (consult above for links) Haven't had my own pair to grace my bikes but I've heard only good news about them lately. Plus they're cheap compared to what I have, Hold Fasts which are great aswell if you're willing to pay premium for premium, as opposed to the retrogresion one's which are described as premium but for bargain bin price. |
Not trying to be a shill but since people are recommending them (thanks guys), here's the link:

I remember seeing these in a topic somewhere on Bikeforums a while back.

+1 on the retro-gression straps.

^ Those sound like the ones Ben's had a couple years back.I had two pairs. One broke after a month, wearing out where it goes through the pedal, the other started delaminating a couple month later.

I think I recall TT saying he uses (or used) a set and they held up really well.
|
wabi cycles has some doubles that I've got on my team track which are ok.
|
I heard they smell bad.
|
if you're looking to save money and want to go with clips and straps instead of the retrogressions, try buying nylon clips instead of metal ones. They work just fine and are usually half the price.
http://www.treefortbikes.com/product...ouble-Toe.html those are just 9 bucks plus shipping. I just googled that in 10 seconds so you may be able to find it even cheaper or in a set with straps. |
