Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I'm definitely feeling the aesthetics of these crafted dropouts. They're ****ing beautiful. At the same time, I can't help but wonder, are there any functional purposes to these designs (stiffness, strength, durability, etc.)?

Not saying that a lack of functionality would take any of my appreciation away from their frame builder's work. I am just curious.

yeah they're thicker than cheap ugly ones(kilo) and the cutout maximizes strength and rigidity while minimizing weight. the maxway style ones are supposed to look pretty(same as all city) and the tange ones(alien) are supposed to give you a few different gearing options with the same chain length because they're so long.

Since this has turned into the "Post Your Dropouts" thread, here is my favorite:

And to get back on track, I swapped the cheap Tec-9 cranks on the Scrambler for old battered SR road triple:

I kept the same old $12 ebay ring. It bolts from the inside into the spider:

The payoff: these cranks are narrower and shorter (165mm vs. 170mm) which is more comfortable and easier to spin for my short legs. I also put the old ratty Maillard CXC pedals back on for a while:

First time I've ever seen cranks that look decent with the ring on the inside! Those pedals look sweet too! What straps are those by the way?

Oddly enough, I actually like those cranks. Its almost endearing, just because of how unorthodox they look.

I'm too lazy to search myself, but good luck finding some. I've never seen anything like that before, so at least in my eyes, they'll probably be taxed upon heavily.

But seriously, if you anno'd those cranks pink and put a face on them, I would forever be your slave.

edit: Here's a write-up for anybody interested

The Mavics have a very low Q factor so they are popular with those with knee issues thus hard to find.

Nice. I have one sticker on my bike, godandfamous. I met the guy and he's a friend of my roommates. He has a big boy job at droga5 and his label is launching soon. He has some really cool work.

Cross post to same in Utility Cycling. But its a Single Speed so still counts for this forum also I think.

My Surly 1x1 got re-allocated and outsourced to kid duty rather than commute rain bike. Oh how the mighty have fallen. First single speed rigid MTB, then Rain Bike, then kid and grocery hauler. Makes me think of my progression in cars. Lexus SC400 --> Acura NSX & Honda S2000 --> Acura MDX & Honda Odyssey. Sigh...

King hubs/Headset
Thompson Stem(s) and Post
XTR Brakes
Campy crankset with 50x20t gearing

My kids love it, and always get a kick out of jumping on the bike for a spin.

And in super-minivan mode, in front on my.... minivan
