Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Just reply "It's a fixed gear" and when they get all confused just walk away.

I think people who get worked up over "fixie" are pretentious.

I would assume they are roadies who also use their bikes for transportation. One of the nice things about LOOK pedals is they're big enough that you can use them as platforms if you're just beating around. I've certainly done it.

The word fixie does not bother me at all.

I'm also jumping onto the "looking-at-roadies-more-than-fixies" band wagon.

I fell twice on the same ride. At a complete stop. With one foot un-clipped and on the ground. At the same intersection, going different ways.

And you created a new account to cover your shame?

I backpedal a bit when trackstanding on a freewheel so people know it's not a fixie and that I can still trackstand... as though anyone would care. It's pretty self conscious/sad. I used to never put my feet down on rides even if I was tired.

So much of this thread is true.

I've lurked BF for a few years now and never post. I feel like I know all of you, but, i don't really.
I love conversions
I got a bianchi frame just because it was a bianchi
I'm putting a rear brake on my next build
I like building and fixing bikes more than i like riding them
I like flipping bikes
Sometimes i wanna do tarcky things to my bike and don't because i don't want people to talk **** about my bike
I don't post my bikes in the "Post your Bike" thread because i don't people to talk **** about my stuff even though i know it looks good and has good components

I want to punch people that use the word "fixie" period. To me at least, the term is as generic as the cheap crap the people that use it buy. From experience, People that come in asking for "fixie" parts generally don't know what they need nor do they want to pay for it. People that come in asking for "track" parts tend to know exactly what they want and are willing to pay the price to get what they want. I see a lot of completely ridiculous things everyday and get asked ridiculous questions like "Do you guys sell fixie pumps?" or "Y'all sell headsets? It's for a fixie." As if there is one size headset that only fits a "fixie". So many times, "I need a bottom bracket." "What size?" "It's for a fixie" Insert facepalm here.

I find misuse of the words "track bike" annoying; like some kid call his Scrambler with risers a track, then he whines about how people use the word fixie.

I would have to agree about the misuse of the words "track bike" A conversion is by no means a "track bike" nor is a scrambler with risers.

Haha my school has fallen for the word fixie

"No riding Bicycles, Scooters, Skateboards, Longboards, Rollerblades or Fixies in the Residence Halls"

I was quite taken aback to know my mode of transport was no longer a bike according to the university of california

The peanut gallery will decide on first impressions of unimpressive road bicycle, or impressionistic statements on said topic.

Edit: Staying on topic per my response. I correct people when they say "fixie," unless it is I saying "fixie" to diminish their tarck bike.
