Hep Building Coasty
I need help figuring out how to build a coasty. The only hang up I have is the rear wheel. How or what do I need to convert a deep v fixed wheel into a free wheel? Pros/cons
Thanks for looking |

what?
fixed gear: bike with fixed rear wheel singlespeed: bike with rim or disc brakes that has a freewheel or freehub coasty: dumb way of saying bike with coaster brake, which is a hub with an arm activated drum brake. unless you mean singlspeed, which if that is the case all you need is a set of brakes and a bmx freewheel to thread on where the fixed cog should go. however, it depends entirely on what your wheel has on it now and what you are trying to do. if you want a coaster brake where you stand on the pedal as it's behind the crank to brake, then you'll need a new hub. hep me! what the **** are you on about? |
I hate the word "fixie" and now we have "coasty" F*ck me runnin!!
|
coasty?
gtfo biggest pro to freewheels is how much fun brakeless becomes. |
Great thread... or greatest thread? I can't stop lol'ing.
|
I can't stand "fixie" but I kind of like "coasty" if it refers to a coaster brake.
|
This thread makes me want to get a coaster brake rear wheel... 50 bucks

Win. |
Assuming you mean coaster brake, you need a new hub. You can't convert an existing one.

I see the OSOBIKE website is no longer up. I was so hoping to link to it.

HEP HEP HEP HEP HEP

"even though this bike kind of has a high crank ratio, it pedals very easily, because of the way the tires are."
|
"Really what else is there to maintain on it? Not much."
How about that coaster brake? Ever try to stop on one that needs to be repacked badly? |
thanks guys. this helps me out a lot. cc700 didn't help me out by saying "what the ****are you on about?".....that isn't even a sentence. Are you asking what am I on? Or what am I asking? Don't ask me a question that has to be answered by asking you a question to clarify the stupidity of your question. Thanks everyone else though....I have some fresh ideas now!

Exactly!

I'm actually interested in hearing about some coaster hub options. Is 120mm spacing the standard for coaster hubs? I understand that there are some coaster brake options with internal gears. I'd like to run something along the lines of a 3-speed IGH with a coaster brake. I've seen this: Shimano Nexus, does anyone have any experiences with it. Weight is of moderate concern.
|
Most single speed coaster hubs I've seen are 110mm.
In all seriousness, I really like a SS coaster laced to 700c rims on an every-day-around-town kind of bike. I used to have a cruiser with a Nexus 3 speed, didn't like the hub at all. It was loud in two of the three gears and there was a lot of flex during braking, like something inside wasn't stiff enough. IGH coaster hubs are generally pretty heavy. |

I've got a SRAM S-7 hub with coaster brake that I used to have shoved into my motobecane messenger. It's a little on the heavy side but it works well and I enjoyed many happy miles on it. I'm not using it anymore since I converted that bike back to FG and I picked up a Nexus 8 speed (non-coaster braked model) for another build.
