Cassette/Freewheel Questions Schwinn World Sport SS Conversion
Hello all,
So I got this sweet Schwinn World Sport the other day for $15! In my ignorance I thought a SS conversion of this ride would be as easy as removing the rear cogs and buying a spacer kit to accomodate the one SS cog. Come to find out the rear cogs are all one mechanism or rather the frewheel and cog set are all one piece.
So if I want to reuse the rear wheel do I need to redish the wheel to bring the hub closer to center and just use a BMX style single cog freewheel? I spun on a spare freewheel I had just out of curiosity but as I suspected the chainline was way crooked.
I have zero budget for this project save for the $20 or so I planned on spending for the spacer kit and cog so buying a new wheel is out. Any suggestions or help is much appreciated.

Realizing you have a freewheel hub and not a cassette system is half the battle. What you need to do to redish the wheel is to move around the spacers on the axle until you get a straight chainline. Then, using a spoke wrench, (less than $10) you can loosen the right side spokes and tighten the left side spokes (or vice versa) until your wheel sits in the middle of the frame again.
Your LBS should be able to do this too for a small fee.

Thanks for the replies! So is there an easy way to identify a freehub when looking at a bike for a potential SS conversion? Is the freehub a proprietary thing? Are cassettes more common on older bikes? I also have an older Peugeot and Centurion roadies that I want to convert, They will likely be cassettes as well?

Nice, thanks for the info. I was on the Sheldon Brown site for a while last night, not sure how I missed that. Thanks again all
