fixed gear beach cruiser?

i would like to know if its possible to get my singlespeed beach cruiser into a flip flop fixed/free beach cruiser
would i be able to just switch out the hub and put in a fixed/ free hub?
i love the feel of a fixie but i love the style and comfort of my cruiser
i just want to know if i can get the best of both worlds
any info on this would be greatly appreciated

If you get the correct rim laced to a fixed/free hub then why not. Aren't most beach cruisers built with coaster brakes? I dont know you'll be able to put brakes on it.

well if i use the normal 26'' rim for a cruiser and switchout the hub, will it work??

hairnet 04-02-11 08:27 PM

sure, as long as you can adjust chain tension

rickyp. 04-02-11 08:38 PM

thanks man, apprecciate it
do you know of any hubs that would be good for this kind of project?

You'll also need to measure the dropouts to determine how long the axle must be. If it's an older cruiser, the spacing is typically 110mm, and you might have trouble getting a track hub to fit in there.

REMspeedwagon 04-02-11 08:59 PM

I did it once. Um..

rickyp. 04-02-11 09:07 PM

i jus measured the dropouts and its about 110mm

rickyp. 04-02-11 09:10 PM

ok, nevermind, its actually about 120mm

striknein 04-02-11 10:33 PM

You should be fine then. How many spokes are on your current rim?

rickyp. 04-02-11 11:44 PM

ummm rough estimate on the spokes is 32 or 36

Still the best deal you'll find in a 32h configuration.

rickyp. 04-03-11 10:13 AM

jus counted them exactly and it has 36 spokes, will that be a problem?

UCF Eric 04-03-11 10:46 AM

With that 32h hub? Yes, but you can find a fixed/free 36h hub that will work, it may just not be as cheap.

Why?

Xgecko 04-03-11 11:18 AM

there is a guy in my home town who rides a cruiser framed fixxie, though I believe that he changed the front fork for a regular 700c sized fork

Hate to bump an old thread but how do you know which 700c forks will fit on a cruiser frame?

Since every cruiser frame is different, you will just have to do trial and error to get a fit, or measure your frame.

It is like asking if a size 9 US shoe will fit on a 17 year old.
