Feel like a Boss riding Fixed?

A friend and I often ride our bikes around campus just for fun. He has some geared bike and whenever I blast by him he always tells me to slow down and wait up. Bombing hills, passing cars, other cyclists, doing tricks, it all feels like the equivalent of driving a race car in the city. The best part is having a sort of direct connection with the road. You can feel the tire pushing against the ground and it's so satisfying. Any similar experiences?

I have to agree with you on this one. Whenever I ride with someone who has a geared bike they always say "wait up!"

Robofunc 04-03-11 01:01 PM

Yeah because geared bikes are totally slower than fixed. Everyone knows that.

I'm not sure how other people having gears as anything to do with anything other than people slower than you also ride bikes.

You guys are probably simply stronger riders than your friends.

i dont understand how anyone could be confused by that. i mean, its obvious, right? someone who has tools to gain mechanical advantage[derailleurs] is slower. it must be the rider. simple physics dictates the geared bike is faster. period.

non-believers: make an effort to get really fast over the next summer on your fixed gear. run a lower gear than you normally do and force yourself to spin like mad. next spring buy a road bike. you will understand then.

It could also be that some people are not out to race either. Maybe you should ditch your friends and ride with Lance Armstrong, he might be able to keep up with you if he is lucky!

Your probaly just trying harder

The only time I feel like a boss riding is when I pull my kids to the grocery store in the trailer and some kid in the parking lot looks at my kids in the trailer, then at his mom's minivan, then at his mom and asks "Why can't we ride bikes to the store?"

Any other time, I just feel like I'm riding my bike.

how i feel ^^

My experience- is yes!!! i feel like a BOSS tycoon riding around on my track bike. On a fixed gear you rely less on mechanics and more on strength. your not depending on your shifter/derailluer/cables to make it easier on you, so you work harder and get stronger!!

now of course there are other advantages to having gears, like working more effeciently by using gears to your advantage. so dont start bashing away just yet

fixed gears are awesome, and so are road bikes they both have unique elements that fit better with certain people. me, i love fixed gear its sustainable and practical in times like these

I is boss.

When i ride my fixed gear bikes i usually feel like i'm riding a bike. Kinda the way i feel on my road bike. Maybe i'm gonna feel like a boss once i build my tall bike, looking down on the world and stuff...

No no no, man, riding fixed lets you be one with the road, man. And that makes you cooler than your lame, geared friend, who just doesn't get it, man. So you're totally cooler than him. And faster.

Regardless, I'm glad OP likes his bike! :thumb:

For every story told about a guy on a fixed gear beating a guy on a geared bike, there are 99 untold stories of the opposite happening.

It's kinda like David vs Goliath. If Goliath had won we'd have never heard about it.

I hate when I'm riding at the end of a 40-50 miler and some kid on a fixed gear wants to try to race..I'm usually tired, but it annoys me enough that I just can't let it slide:P

bhop 04-03-11 04:18 PM

I get passed all the time by roadies when i'm commuting to work.. but then, that happens on my road bike too.

Danzaxbonanza 04-03-11 05:34 PM

I don't feel like much of a boss when I mash up hills and see people on geared bikes spin past me comfortably.
