multiple gears on a fixed gear.. possible? or just plain dumb

is it possible to have multiple gears on a fixed gear bike? has anyone done this before? i know it kinda goes against the whole "simplicity and low maintenance" philosophy of fixed gear bikes and all, just one of those "what if" things..:backpedal:

I will be running one in a couple months, just not not sure what frame I am going to use for the build. I am assuming I will need one with braze ons.

you could run the cable along the top tube and use velcro straps like i've seen some people do to run a rear brake on frames without brazons.. not sure how well it would work though
