That kind of sucks. Providence is supposed to be having their "first annual" bike festival on Saturday. It's a fairly easy 30 miles RT for me to bike down, I'm not going if it rains.

Lol! I thought about it, but I was too mad about it breaking to attempt to look crazy the rest of the way to work. Bike will be fixed by Friday though.

Today I rebuilt the pedals on my commuter, while doing it, I saw the ones in my parts bin and shrugged why not and rebuilt those too.

Yeah, looks like Saturday's build session might be canceled.

Today I had an easy road ride.

I get that all the time. Either some jerk wants 50 grand, or some good hearted soul offers to buy me food.

While I like riding in the rain, I hate digging in the rain.

Even though you're joking, I just got a little bit violently angry. My brain could not handle it.

Brand new GP4000s, 0. Glass, 1.

On my way home from work yesterday saw some broken glass (actually quite a bit) in the bike lane, traffic was heavy so I couldn't swerve around it so well.

No biggy, these tires are rated high against punctures and I even put some handy dandy tire liners in, I'll be fine.

Wrong! A tiny sliver of glass must have got picked up and stuck between the rim and tire. One minute later, pop, hiss, and a nice hole in the sidewall. It was the back tire. I gave up and called for a ride. Less than 50 miles on them too. Grrr.

That said, is there any way to salvage it? The hole isn't gigantic, just looks like someone took a sharp knife and stuck the tip into my tire.

if i saw a conti tire without something that resembled at least 10 of what you're describing, i'd be shocked.

This is an old school trick, but if a cut is large enough to bother me, i put a bit of shoe goo in it, it keeps grit and stuff from working its way into the hole.

An other trick I use when i realize i have run over bits of glass; I run my gloved hand on the tire in an attempt to dislodge any bits that are stuck to the surface and may eventually work themselves through. Disclaimer: you may crash and die a terrible death while doing this.

Unfortunately this technique doesn't work well if you are running fenders.

SpeshulEd 05-08-13 09:08 AM

Hmm, maybe I'll try some shoe goo and the dollar trick. I have backups on the way but to toss a tire with 44 miles on it hurts a little on the inside.

If the hole is large enough to require a boot, you will want to put a patch on the inside of tire.

Muffin Man 05-08-13 10:19 AM

Woke up at 5 to go for a ride this morning.
Best decision I have made in a long time.

I'm probably exaggerating on how bad this is...here's a quick photo. The hole is right beneath the flag. Thoughts?

Those aren't disc hubs. I'm building them up for a friend's Allez EVO.

Nagrom_ 05-08-13 12:17 PM

I couldn't personally bring myself to drop 6 bills on a hubset. And I'd be damn sure they came with some mother ****ing skewers at that price.
