Cages vs Straps..
 

So i have had cages on my bike ever since i started riding fixed and it just looks a little bland and over the top to me now, i like the clean look of the thick BMX straps, What are the pros and cons of each?

And also i seen tons of the thick straps going for $50+ is there a cheaper brand i can get at my LBS and that will go on a wellgo pedal? ive only ever seen them on thick gummy bmx pedals..thanks

Well, $42 bucks is definitely better than $50+.

I don't think I've heard a single complaint about Retrogression's straps, plus it comes with the pedals.

Actually I have two complaints about the Retro-gression straps. I personally feel that they are a bit too smooth; when I put my feet into the straps, they don't feel as secure as I would like them to be. They do, of course, hold my feet in well, but it just doesn't feel secure. Also, I think the velcro straps (the double-sided ones) are too long. I had to cut them down and strap them to the very end in order to get a decent fit.

For those reasons I'm looking towards buying cages now.

well those all seem pretty trivial in my opinion.. you FEEL like they aren't secure, but they do hold your feet in well, soo... I don't know lol.


you should talk to Scrod about those and hopefully he'll take it into consideration.

The lower ones are just the top ones, but with pedals.

Never tried the Retrogression ones but I've got some Holdfasts with Haro Small Block pedals and they are great. They feel much more secure to me than double straps and clips. Feet are glued to the pedals in just the right spot and easy to get in and out of. Also buy you a little more space on the front and eliminated the toe overlap I was having. Plus you never break or dent a clip or have those little screws that hold clips loosen up on you. They blow doors on single straps and beat doubles by a good margin too. If you compare them to a double straps and clips set up, they really aren't too expensive especially with newer brands like those Retrogression ones going for $25. No marks on your sneakers from clips and easily adjust to a variety of shoes.

Vaio - The reason the inner straps are that length is to accommodate a lot of different size feet/shoes. It's easy to trim them down if you find them too long but not possible to make them longer should they be too short. The reason we opted for the smoother seatbelt webbing is because through testing, we found it to be much more durable and stretch-resistant than rougher webbing. Also, the smoother stuff does less damage to your shoes.

They're definitely good straps, and I'm glad I bought 'em. I'm just more interested in cages now is all. Speaking of which, do you think size 8.5 Vans Eras can fit in the large MKS cages you have on your site?

The 4x clips? No way. They'll be huge.

We've got some standard MKS clips coming this week. You should most likely get mediums.

my only complaint with the retro straps is that they are a bit bulky, and i found them tougher to get in. although that is mostly due to the platoform pedals that i am using, they dont have tabs to flip them over with. i think they would work better for me on my track pedals that do have tabs.

I wear size 8 Authentics, and the medium MKS clip fits perfectly.

I got new pedals for my bike recently and hadn't thought to compensate for the thickness of my Catalinas' straps, so I had to go back to my Blaq straps. ): The Catalinas are definitely great though.

Can you even get non-clipless pedals without cages? Like, just spindles? Why would you want to?

I think MKS GR-9s are one of the last few clip pedals that aren't technically cages. At least I don't think they're technically cages. They're a solid one-piece.

Hobo pedals. Work if they greased.

Does anyone know of any BMX style straps that would work on MKS sylvan track pedals? I don't really like the feel of clips/cages but I love track pedals.
