Raleigh Build
guy wants $100 for the frame because he said he can't sell the bike for much without it. Or he said he'll add
bianchi track wheels and hubs origin8 cranks Bianchi chainring Power grip pedals and straps. Shimano bb riser bars and charge $200 Thoughts? I do like the look of this bike but I'm trying to use extreme caution with building up an older low end frame since I just don't know that much about them before pics http://i56.tinypic.com/901ttw.jpg http://i54.tinypic.com/e5meu1.jpg |
so you get that frame, and the parts listed for $200, then combine into a conversion and have a ton of things to throw into the spare parts bin? That sounds pretty worth it to me
the frame paint still looks nice, and rust on chrome parts is nothing that some oxalic acid won't get rid of easy. |
he also has b43s he's willing to put on for another $100
|
I'd pass. Two hundo could probably be spent better elsewhere.
But, it's obvious you have the bug. Your call. |
I would buy those B43s from him for 100$ and flip them.

This looks like somebody's failed project with leftover parts from other bikes. Don't take his problem off his hands have give him cash for it.
Keep looking and find what you want instead of settling. |
$200 and some time will get you a fully built and newer road bike. You should actually ask him $50 for all that.

I'd go for it (the combo minus the b43s) - price isn't great, but it'll be a fun buildup Just make sure this year Raleigh doesn't have the specific threading |

This is one of those situations in which the guy is super hopeful he can pawn off his old junk on some sucker and get $200. Don't be that sucker.

it think he probably had the bike for sale for a hundred bucks, hamfoh here proabably said "will you take 50 for just the frame? i'm going to build a fixed gear" and the seller said "no because the components on this aren't worth a dime but if you want to spend more i'll raid my spare parts bin for you"
i rode a raleigh conversion for a few years, it wasnt a bad bike at all, that being said it was 5 bones at a garage sale, raleigh has made and continues to make some really nice models, that looks more like a canadian made bike boom era thing, it's indestructible but heavy, and you may or may not have trouble replacing the bottom bracket because raleigh used a variety of threadings at the time, atleast one of which is proprietary. |
Only the Nottingham-made Raleighs have nonstandard threading IIRC. It's still a **** frame and not worth $50 let alone $100.
|
Yes. That is a terrible price.
|
If the frame was a decent Reynolds 531 it might be worth 50$-80$ otherwise keep looking! This looks like a cheapo low-end prob Hi-Ten steel frame. Worth about 20$ here on PDX CL
|
soyboy explained what I had previously worded properly. I asked him if I could just buy the frame (he had the bike for sale for $125) for a buildup, he said the components aren't worth anything without the bike so could do it, but couldn't sell it to me for as low as I wanted. I told him I thought the frame price was a bit much still, but as part of the combo for $200 it didn't seem as bad.
Yeah I told him it sounded like he had an old bianchi he built up and had all these parts leftover. the price as a bundle seemed reasonable, but the frame price alone I wasn't happy with. Though since he was offering to do the conversion for me it also seemed like some free labor to consider. what you guys said about settling is exactly what I was doing though now that I think about it. I thought the frame was nice looking and had an interesting orange color, but all his components are silver, which I was less than thrilled about and think I had my judgement clouded by the fact I just sold my last fg so only have a road bike at the moment and was feeling the itch to get another asap, even if it wasn't exactly what I wanted. |
You can definitely do much better for $200. Keep looking!
|
Well I can say that a real "track" wheelset will set you back at least 100$ used cranks origin 8= 50$ new
If the parts are in decent condition I'd pay 75$ bucks for them. Try in get the whole combo for $125-150 then sell the bike as is and look for another frame! Pricing is wayyyy outta wack here in pdx. Even this is a bit steep http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/bik/2343788137.html |
yeah I was considering having him build it up with what he had them flipping it on CL as a fixed, but I went back and saw the price was actually $250, so I just flat out passed.
thanks everyone |
