Possible new frame

So, I have the opportunity to pick up a '90s Cannondale Track frame, which is one of my dream frames.

The seller says there are some minor dents in the TT and also some scratches on the chain stays. This isn't really an issue for me. I think those add character and show its been ridden. (getting better pictures to make sure the dents are indeed nothing major)

What I would really like to know is, what would be a reasonable offer? I might ask what he was looking to get out of it.

$50 is the most I would pay for a frame with dents over the interlink.

A "minor dent" could be a ding from locking up or could be from a major crash. Unless I could verify without a doubt (see it in person) that it was straight and not compromised, I would pass, but I am picky with stuff like that.

Right. It will be a judgement call I will have to make. I might not be as picky as you.

But, assuming that these "minor dents" are indeed minor, what would be a reasonable offer?

this 93 cannondale sold for $700 and was in 'great' condition with no dings or scratches (i had to talk myself out of pulling the trigger on it :P)

the area of $700 seems to be where a lot of these frames fall, so if the dings aren't bad, you could ask a little lower.

Received some higher quality photos. The minor dents are indeed, minor. Dent was probably the wrong word. Ding is correct. Little chips from what I would assume is a lock.

I was thinking $600-650, or around there. I prefer this frame over the Pista Concept, which is my second choice, that I can get from my LBS. That would cost me about $780-800.

Seem about right?

i love that frame too but i would probably avoid it unless you can scoop it up for a real steal like 300 bucks, they may be tiny dings but they're dings in aluminum you might find yourself with a cracked frame in 3 months, you might have a frame for life, it's a risk

i was gonna say, either it's a repaint or someone stripped the decals off (tough to tell if that's original forrest green), and most people seem to be after the blue.

definitely check it out in person, you should know pretty quickly if it's really fulfilling your dream

650 is alot for a 20 year old aluminum frame.

HELL NO THAT'S EXTORTION. I paid $650 for a pristine more sought out 52cm WITH king HS and sugino grand mighty in blue in a bro deal.... you might aswell spend that much on PBR and cigarettes.

I will never understand owning a 20 year old aluminum frame I wouldn't buy it unless I could take to to a metal shop and have them do pressure test o the tubing and joints to make sure it wasn't about to fail

aluminum is really susceptible to metal fatigue and stress just sayin' you may want to go ahead and buy the newer frame to save yourself some heart ache

old steel is good old aluminum is deadly

damn those aluminum aeroplanes! never gonna get in one again :(

yummygooey 04-27-11 11:46 PM

Cannondale should reissue these frames.

actually the FAA requires hull pressure and stress testing of all aircraft so no you are pretty safe with planes as they are also made of magnesium and riveted together
