Its true. If more people looked out for each other we wouldn't have worry so much. On the other hand I've also heard plenty of cases about thieves reacting violently and completely ignoring peoples threats to call police. Maybe one day it will be cheap enough to add gps location to bikes.

agreed that bike theft sucks, but i've heard of wheel theft in chicago, i'd much rather just lock my bike properly than live in the midwest

Theft in Chicago is just the same as any other major city.

For my steel (narrower tubes) commuter back when I was doing it daily in the SF, I always carried 1 krypto evo mini LS and 1 krypto evo mini; the LS for the sheldon method plus stays and the mini for the front, rim to down tube. Super glued ball bearings in allen heads of components. Always done the trick for me.

I have a Kryptonite braided steel coiled lock. I run it through the rear triangle+the rear wheel, the front wheel, and the saddle. I take off the saddle+seatpost from the frame and lock it up.

I was riding the light rail here in Denver, and I saw a bike locked to a bike rack, but all that was there was the fork, the cranks (and I'm assuming the bb was there), and the frame. I guess the poor soul only locked up the frame...

Just came pack from Essex (regional off price retailer). Heh they had two Kryptonite locks (minus some packaging)-- A New York Lock STD for $34 and an Evolution series 4 (regular) for $27.

My locking strategy depends on where I'm locking. Typically, I'll lock with some combination of two mini U-locks and a cable in a highly exposed area.

I usually have 20 tabs between macrumors forums, gizmodo, and engadget before I start with bike forums. I only read those sites after I get home from school or finish a bike ride.

This thread has gone down the toilet and there have been about a thousand other threads about how to lock up. If you really need more info, do a search.
