Is the Origin8 trackstar crankset an upgrade from stock 2010 Madison's?

Would it be a lateral upgrade, or up/down?

My campus LBS has them on sale for $35.

They look like Andels. If they are, it's probably a slight upgrade.

not to knock them but unless you are changing crank length you are better off saving your money for a true upgrade

Therefore, not an upgrade? Normally I wouldn't even consider any orgin8 parts, but since they were on sale for $35 i had a few second thoughts.

You could do worse for $35 if you needed cranks, but I would just save up for something better. No need to fix what isn't broken.

What is your concern with the current crankset?

lack of a name or any words on the crankset makes me nervous. it also seems like the pedal threads are very prone to stripping.. already happened with my right pedal and I had to ship it back to get replaced.

Stripped pedal threads are usually a result of an improperly installed pedal and can happen on even the most high-end crank arms. Sounds like you're just looking for a reason to buy something.

+1

You would probably benefit from a good tune up, where everything was properly adjusted or reinstalled correctly. This would make the bike feel much more solid and operate better.

You could then save up for better quality upgrades and get you more for your money.

true, user error had a part to play with it too, but I would not say that I'm simply trying to justify a purchase, ha.

and yes calv, I am from Davis. I was waiting for someone to ask me that lol.

What about their hubs? They are rebranded formulas right? Just wondering because I have heard several opinions on them.

Yes, they are Formulas, but they are no cheaper than if you bought them under the Formula name, and can get them cheaper from IRO.

IRO no longer carries rebranded Formulas, but their new hubs have gotten good rep, too.

I found them for the same price as Omniums (~$170) through online retail stores, and $130 on eBay. Omniums can be had that cheap on eBay, too, but I guess you'll only find them new for that much if you're lucky/patient.

I'd rather rotten oranges than give my money to a company like Origin 8.
