mtb triple crankset, fixed gear, no chainguard - foolish?

Hi,

I bought an MTB triple crankset for my fixed gear bike, however I went for the model without a chainguard.

Is this foolish? I can always grind down the big ring - the chain will run on the middle ring.

I don't really want to carve up my leg (however I do run a double without a chainguard on my road bike and have never thought about it....!).

Thanks

Daven

Why didn't you just save yourself the hassle and buy a cheap single crankset? Too readily available for you?

You're going to slice your achillese tendon riding a MTB triple without a chain guard! I can't believe they sold you one without one!

So why did you buy the triple? Don't worry about killing yourself, anytime you're in the smaller rings on a geared bike you'd be in the same situation. I've never jammed my leg on a chainring.

remove the extra rings. You will need shorter chainring bolts or spacers.

thanks, thought as much but it is good to check! I bought the triple because my fixed wheel is currently on a hybrid conversion using a triple so the chainline is set up for that, also it was considerably cheaper than any singlespeed crankset I could find. so I was saving myself money and hassle

thanks

If the triple you bought is that much cheaper than a singlespeed crankset then it probably has riveted chainrings.

Using the middle ring on a triple very often produces the same chainline as it would be by using a typical single. Just sayin'.

Yeah it does.

And Scrodzilla, it may be the same chainline but it costs more, and I couldn't find the gearing I wanted - I run quite a low gear.

I have only hit my leg on my big ring a couple times with a few small punctures as a result. I ride on the street and do small skinnys and jumps. Funny thing, i am worried about the ring getting damaged, not my leg. For single track (mountain biking) I would recomend replacing it with a bash gaurd cause that thing could land on you. You could make one I suppose, or perhaps pad it somehow.

Or you could stay home.
