Mongoose Detain at WalMart for $200

I saw this bike at WalMart tonight in Vancouver, Washington which is next to Portland, Oregon. It's by Mongoose. Single speed. It had white tires, white grips, white chain. The frame was silver w/ the logo in white. It had a black kickstand. It looked super clean except for the kickstand which seemed in the way. I Googled the bike and can't find any info. The WalMart site doesn't have it either. It's a great looking bike though. The grips were very thin and hard though like BMX grips and the brakes only fit like 3 of my fingers which I didn't like.

I can second the detain frame.

It's got a bent seat tube
ala
Schwinn Sprint and KHS.

Since when does a Schwinn Sprint have a contoured seat tube?

Yeah...... don't buy.

Walmart bike have a lifetime of 20 miles and then the amount of money you have to spend to make them work is about the same price of the bike time 2 or 3

I was talking about the 74-75 Schwinn Sprints.

I've seen them go for over 200 on Ebay.

Mongoose sure has some funny names for their bikes.
Cachet-first wally world fixed "speed" bike.
Deception-the 40lb 29er
and now the
Detain.

Perhaps the next one should be called Death Trap.

I'm serious. Looking for a really cheap roadie to play around with. I do not want to spend more than $200 ($250 max) then will buy a better one when Im ready.

Looking at this and the Denali. And the Denali has had it's share of fame in this forum. I'm also scavenging the local sales.

G****ump

The bike is OK,
But you can get a much better bike- used- for maybe $250-$300.
For $200 you can get a $500 used bike or for $300 you can get a $700 used bike.
Hunt CL for a used bike. $600 original price bike- will be a decent bike-this $200 new bike is a cheap bike- functional, but it will immediately become a $80 bike($800 being what you could sell it for).
Good bikes- undented of course- last a lifetime- only brake pads cables really wear much. Most folks don't ride their bikes enough to wear out the cassettes, chains cranksets.
If you look you'll find a low miles used bike for about the same $200-$300

Buy a used road bike. $250 will get a much nicer used bike than anything you'll find at Walmart.

Unlike carbon fiber you can leave this out in the sun.
Saddle not level.
Only having one gear made me breath heavy going uphill.
