Fixed Gear + Q.R.

So for the past few months I've been rocking a Fixe with QR axles. And i have to say, it's nice, makes maintenance, and wheels off night locking, a lot easier, not to mention when i throw the bike in someones else's trunk(which i do fairly often). The speed and ease of these little dandies is something i've taken for granted, as my commuter has had nutted axles for the past few years.
Anyways i'm not saying carrying around a 15mm wrench or using one is a big deal, but not having too is still nice

BTW i know why this is to why some consider this unsafe, so don't bother going there.

if you already know it's considered unsafe, and you ask us not to go "there"

then why did you even make this thread?

ianjk 05-05-11 03:47 PM

Since when were they unsafe?

FastJake 05-05-11 03:54 PM

I don't get the point of this thread either... But yes, QR is perfectly good with FG as long as you lock it down and use a good skewer. People that say different are using a bad skewer or don't know what they're doing.

I had an old Campy Victory wheelset with a suicide hub that worked perfectly for the few years that I used them on a beater. I never noticed the QR rear slip anymore than a solid axle hub.

Cool story? Bro?

Duly noted.

...looking forward to the "my rear wheel slipped in traffic" threads.

Well i guess my point was to see how many others doing this also but i think next Fixie wheelset i build up is going to have QR axles for sure. anyone got any 120mm QRs kicking?

Scrodzilla 05-06-11 11:55 AM

You'll be dead way before you build up another wheelset. RIP, brah!

JohnDThompson 05-06-11 12:53 PM

There's nothing wrong with QR levers on fixed gear hubs. Until the mid 60s Campagnolo offered their track hubs in that configuration:

QRs were eventually banished from the track not because they would let wheels slip, but because of concern that the levers could catch on other riders' wheels.

And those those asking who says it's unsafe, i've had numerous people tell me after seeing my bike over the past few months.

Yep yer sure gonna die w/ quick release. Everytime it comes loose, your wheel is just gonna fly right off. You'll be flung into a bus.

Bat56 05-06-11 02:45 PM

what is the worst that can happen?

The chain comes off and since you're a cool brakeless hipster you crash into a fixed object and die. Basically the same thing that can happen if you don't tighten the axle nuts enough. Fact is, I've never had a QR get loose, because I use a good quality all steel internal cam QR and know how to adjust it properly (some people don't). My latest FG build uses a QR, so far I'm still alive. Power to the BFSSFG flying squirrel!

hahaha.. I guess I personally feel safer having my solid axles.

hairnet 05-07-11 02:15 AM

Why? I think if pro racers used to climb mountains on bikes with horizontal drop outs at the speeds that make you sweat on flat ground then your fixie can do with QR. I wish I could modify my Formula hub
