Fixie newbie

I want to buy a fixie to commute to school and go around the neighborhood but I dont know where to start. I don't necessarily have a budget but I would like to keep it under $800 if possible. Would it make sense to buy a fixie to have it painted the color I want?
Are bigshotbikes any good?

yummygooey 05-05-11 09:38 PM

Kilo TT.

Lol.

I'm going to assume you want to buy a complete, I love my Kilo TT for what it matters and a lot of other people seem to agree.

Edge_Walker 05-05-11 09:48 PM

Specialized Langster

Kilo TT

Bianchi Pista

Dawes SST AL

Wabi Classic

Surly Steamroller

All these bikes are <$800. Checking out those may be a good start to your search.

PS: The Bigshot bikes are crap.

batista 05-05-11 09:51 PM

I wouldnt mind putting it together and waiting to get the parts at the right price. I already have a giant to get me around.

Whats the difference between all those bikes. the Langster is $660 while the kilo is half the price, what makes the langster more expensive?
btw i live in nyc and the streets here are crap.

Dude, come on.

yummygooey 05-05-11 09:58 PM

What? The Kilo TT seriously is a really good first fixed gear bike. I wish I had gotten a Kilo TT instead of my Motobecane Track as my first bike.

Scrodzilla 05-05-11 09:59 PM

You say that in every thread and have even started joking about how you say that in every thread. It's getting old.

batista 05-05-11 09:59 PM

What do you think of this bike?

It's a valid recommendation. Unless I'm supposed to recommend a different bike just so I can stop saying "Kilo TT"? It's my opinion that the Kilo TT really is the best bang for the buck under $400 and/or for beginners to the fixed gear side of things.

That bike is cool and I want one too. I personally think steel is the best for commuting and locking up, but the Motobecane Team Track has a lot of nice parts and is definitely a good buy for $800. A couple forum members ride/used to ride that bike, too.

The Big Block is an awesome bike!! I dont think my Steamroller will see much road time since I bought my Big Block.

I like the Dawes SST AL. Its cheap enough to upgrade parts later on. Like I want red tires with deep black rims and no brakes. Between the Motobecane and the Dawes which one is more similar to a giant rapid 2 (which i have now) in terms of comfortability?

I really like the Motobecane's frame but I would hate myself if i spend all that money to later find out that my decision was not the best. And I would have to buy frame only to customize it how I want it.

You could just walk into a local bike shop of which I'm sure there must be a million in NYC and ask to test ride one of the SS/FG bikes they have. There are many options under $800 and it'll make it much easier for you to determine how it feels to ride the bike than just going by how it looks on the internet. It is a little bit more expensive though of course.

So stopped by my lbs today and tried their track single speed, one that looked similar to the ones above and they feel comfortable, the position. I ride a giant rapid 2 now which has an aluminum frame and it's fine so I guess a steel might be fine. I need a 56cm frame, anything above or below doesn't fit right. If I buy the Motobecane frame, how much would be to get the rest of the components? With decent stuff.

ryzman 05-06-11 12:56 PM

you should keep looking batista... there are better bikes besides bikes direct stuff for 800 bucks. also ask your local bike shop if they have heard of motobecane or mercier or dawes and most likely they will tell you they are crap if they even know the brands...
i was seriously considering the kilo wt cause it can run large tires and has better components than the regular tt. but its not set up the way i want it. im willing to spend moremoney to get the bike i really want set up the way i want.
good luck
