Building my first fixie - 1979 Peugeot

Hey guys I'm building my first fixie and its about to get interesting as parts will start arriving over the next week and I should get the frame back from the powdercoaters in the next few days. I'm blogging every step of the way so if any one is interested details are on any comments opinions and/or criticisms would be great. Any suggestions would also be very welcome.

You had a beautiful bike... Hacking off all the braze-ons and having it powdercoated white makes me sad. Would have looked freaking sweet built up the way it was.

That frame's not that special as far as Peugeots go, it's just hi-ten with stamped dropouts. It would have made a really useful touring bike though.

If it was a PX-10, hacking up the frame would have been unforgivable.

You say it's a Swiss Bottom Bracket? Are you sure? If it is, you can't just swap in a standard British thread; in fact finding a Swiss bottom bracket at all, let alone one of the right length will be a pain.

Know it isn't a lightweight racing machine (have 3 vintage Peugeots), but it looked sweet (IMO) as is.

Perhaps but its a cheap frame, paid very little and its stamped not forged, there will be others and I figured that I may as well build what I want when the frame was so cheap. Plus you might not be able to tell but the crankset was ruined, derailleur was very sick, most of what came off was only fit for the bin. It also had some bad surface rust that needed to go and once it was sanded back it needed a respray and the powdercoat is a cheap hard wearing option. If I do a proper restoration it will be on a nicer bike than this.

Really? Miamijim told me "Assuming its Swiss its not to difficult to install a BSA bottom bracket:"

Generally I cry when I see a perfectly good frame get stripped and powdercoated like that, but since it's a lower-end model (hi-ten? according to ianjk) I suppose I don't mind.

To repeat: are you sure it's Swiss threaded? As far as I know most of the older Peugeots are French threaded, and the more modern ones (1980s and up) are generally English threaded. But I have no definitive information on this.

It's definitely not French threaded as the drive side is left hand threaded. I'm presuming as the frame is (going by the serial number sticker) a 70's frame that its too early for BSA so going with swiss as a process of elimination. If it is BSA threaded then thats great. If its swiss threaded and a BSA BB won't fit I can reuse the cups and get a new axle and bearings as they are still in good nick.

My '83 UO-9 has Swiss threading. I ended up using a threadless bottom bracket.

If you do go that route, don't bother trying to use a crank that requires a spindle shorter than 110mm. I had to grind material off the back of my Shimano 105 crank arms in order to get them to clear the cups (107mm spindle). The longer that spindle, the better.

Looks clean. How much did they charge for the powdercoat?

It was £50 for the Shotblast and Powdercoat. Thats about $80. I don't know if thats good for the US but round here thats very cheap.

Put the bottom bracket in yesterday, it fit like a glove. Just waiting on the crank arms and bolt and I can put it all together.

I bought this set, I've removed the red stickers so they are now plain white. Large flange double sided flip flop hubs, Rear hub is 120mm built onto Mach 1 Omega double wall semi profiled white clincher 700c 32 Hole rims with black spokes.

Good to know about the bottom bracket. I would have bet anything that wouldn't have worked, but I have been known to be wrong in the past. On rare occasion at least.

I did a very similar conversion last year, although I started with a circa '85 frame. Didn't get it blasted just stripped off anything unnecessary - basically just went for functionality because this was my first fixie build. Been riding on it for over a year and its been fine; I probably wouldn't have invested time and effort into appearance until I got some basic skills. Otherwise you end up coming of as a poser.

Yeh one is lighter but didn't look it in the pictures when I ordered it. The handle bars are yet to be covered and I haven't put the front brake on yet. Thinking about taking off the tyres and putting on Vitoria Rubinos in Lime to match saddle and bar tape.
