Crashed - Is my headset done?
Crashed my kilo tt. The damage was minimal (to the bike anyway) front wheel was all wobbly and the handle bars and stem were twisted like 60 degrees to the right. I managed to tru up the wheels. Then I loosened the headset and stem to put the bars back into place. But after tightening the headset back up I notice it doesn't turn as loosely as it used to. Its not grinding or anything it just seems over tightened. Loosening it a little doesn't seem to help. Also as I was tightening the bolt, towards the end, it made a creaking noise and seemed to slip.
Anyone know if there's a way to fix or do I need a new headset? Thanks for any help |
You were adjusting the headset with the stem loose, yeah?
|
Yeah the stem was loose, while I was tightening

Loosen the stem bolts and loosen up the headset. Sounds like you might have over torqued the bolt and stripped the starnut. No way to really tell over the internet. You could always take it to a LBS and have then check it out and adjust it. Quick and cheap solution.

Check frame alignment.

crap what happens if the frame is mis aligned? I guess LBS is the way to go
|
You can do a quick test by riding no hands. Does the bike ride straight or veer off? If it goes straight as usual then all is well
|
You may have a bent fork steerer tube, which is causing the binding. The only way to find out is to remove the fork from the frame and examine it for damage.

Thanks I will try your suggestions and if i cant get anywhere off to the LBS
