So I was riding back towards the train station after bouncing early from Monday Night Rehab, only so someone I didn't want to talk to could have a conversation they "needed." She isn't my favorite rider and rather stubborn with bad road manners and as we cruised through the Valley towards the Red Line station a car follows behind us. We keep riding and talking. The car continues to follow directly behind us on an empty street and I wave him around. Soon this dick hole is 10 feet behind us and laying on his horn. Before he has the chance to get any angrier I grab my brake (one of the rare times I use it) and come to a stop so fast he has to move around me. I unclip, pick up my bike and hit the side of his car with it and he stops. The other rider is talking to him which doesn't do much good with my 6'2 raging mad figure screaming at the top of my lungs "GO THE **** AROUND ARE YOU ****ING STUPID? WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING" and within seconds a squad car pulls up.

The other rider explains the situation to the cops, my legs are shaky as I had a little adrenalin rush remembering the last time I got hit. The office talks to us and asks us if were "midnight ridazz" I let the other rider talk and then the office talks to the driver and I hear "Do you want me to arrest you for wreckless driving? bikes are allowed to ride in the street. you're in a 2000lb box of metal what if you hit them? what do you think will happen?" I mean the Officer went off like a G on this jack hole. I was smiling and laughing. He comes back over to us and starts talking. The other rider is...dense to say the least. She keeps telling the Office she knows the law, arguing and talking over him until he says "Look if you don't listen i'm going to arrest your friend for hitting the car with his bike." He finally gets to say what he needs to, runs my ID and thankfully nothing comes up. And very thoughtfully he says that he rides bikes, he rides with his wife and they do ride side by side but when there is traffic they fall into line and let it pass. If a situation comes up with road rage, call the police and they'll deal with it, cars can kill bikers easily.

After his advice he brings the driver out of the car, introduces us to each other and we shake hands and apologize mutually. He says were both free to go and to be more understanding of one and other in the future, regardless of previous experiences. I shook the Officers hand and thanked him sincerely.

The moral of this tangent is you cannot hit and run without a u-lock. If you hit the car with your Bike you probably are not in a great position to ride away quickly.

Well played by the cop. Nice to hear these stories that turn out well. Glad you didn't get hit.

so you choose to escalate violence against a car on the road at night, i'm assuming you had lights on your bikes and this driver was aggressive but you threw your bike at a car?

you're lucky you're neither dead nor arrested for such infantile behavior

A few months ago my girlfriend and I were riding down a one-lane-either-way-with-bike-lanes-on-either-side road. As we approached a red light there was a long line of traffic, so we chose to continue in the bike lane up to the light (not the smartest move). And a car decided to try and pull into the bike lane, I have no idea why, and almost hit my girlfriend. So we both yelled really loud to get his attention so he didn't hit her. No big deal, we continued on our way. But there was another light a couple hundred feet up the road. Again we rode in the bike lane along side the row of cars, but the same guy who pulled into the bike lane saw us coming and decides to cut into the bike lane very threateningly aiming right at me. So I yell and give the guy the one-finger salute as a pass him.
After the light we make a right turn onto a bicycle boulevard (bikes and cars share the road with an 18mph speed limit). The guy follows us, pulls along side and begins yelling and threatening us. And to top it of he called me gay, I mean who does that? I yelled at him saying that he tried to kill us, but kept riding and tried to ignore him. After about 1/4 mile some guy came running up asking what was going on, so we stopped. The guy in the car continued to yell and threatened to shoot us. I pull out my cell phone and call the police, as soon as he saw me reach into my bag he drove away really fast.

He probably thought you were going to pop him one.

thokk2 05-24-11 11:55 AM

Probably, he seemed like the kind of guy who's been shot at before. hahah

Sometimes I wish I had some handy smoke bombs that would light automatically that I could throw in some windows.

He threatened to shoot you? Jesus, what the hell is with people?

Amen to that, ^. Join the 50+ forum and seek wisdom and maturity from its members. This thread is too much - let's be civil first, and examples in our communities second. Sheesh.

Since you may need it anyway, why not carry around a spare fork just in case you get into an accident and your fork gets messed up or some idiot on the road needs one to the face?

Man, I was reading the first line and thought, what a great idea. You always need a fork to eat, plus, you get to be incognito about it and can always shank someone that tries to run you off the road. Plus if you get searched, it doesn't look as bad as having a knife on you. But then I found out you were talking about bike parts =[

I didn't throw my bike at a car. I picked it up and slammed it into the car as it passed me. You have to understand, I've been hit before in similar circumstances and I got an adrenalin rush so large that I was shaking. If you've read any of my passed posts regarding this, I do not condone this behavior nor do I encourage it but we all react to jackasses at some point and this thread is full of examples. In this case I didn't have a u-lock and the only thing I could think to do was throw my bike. Although I held onto it at the last second and just hit the car with my tires. So yeah. Almost threw my bike.

Lol not the fork I meant but ok I guess. Haha. I was actually talking about the fork for bikes considering its bigger than a utensil fork.

Ouch !

thokk2 05-25-11 10:25 AM

Yesterday I was headed to school and a car backed out of their driveway across traffic all the way into the bike lane on my side of the road. So I start to go around them to the left, and the lady starts to go (the same direction as me), to get her attention I slap the rear side window. Of course she doesn't notice and starts to accelerate, but then she sees me in her side mirror (I'm still alongside the car) and as I start to get behind her to go back into the bike lane she slams on the brakes. I swerve to the right (because it was the direction I was already headed) and pass her.

It's a good thing everyone didn't rush all at once to see if the dude was alright. That would have been really confusing.

**** people.

Why bother; the guy obviously has a death wish anyway.

Scrodzilla 05-25-11 12:01 PM

That doesn't mean people's immediate reaction should be to do nothing.

Last month I was headed home from work on Lankershim in North Hollywood. There is a spot south of Victory where the road is so bad you can't ride it so you have to be in the left lane. There was an SUV that was driving like an ******* so I couldn't get over. He start honking which means I slow way down so he has to go around me. Instead of going around me he gets as close as he can and swerves over. He drives beside me long enough to tell me why he believed all cyclist should die and to threaten me. He cuts over again and I got pinched between him and the curb, only reason he didn't get me was because he hit a red light and I ran it to get away from him.

I got way ahead of him after that light and didn't even know if he was still on the road...but a few blocks later he catches up and swerves at me while going super fast. I cut over next to the parked cars and stopped in the road and let him go by. He had dealer plates so there was nothing I could do...

So apparently being threatened by drivers isn't something that uncommon.
