Need help with New Gear Ratio
I'm building a "all around" Single Speed and need some help with my gear ratio
On it right now: 46/16
and it's beating me on the hills.
Should I go with a 17 tooth freewheel or a 18 tooth?

Seriously?
18-19 t?
I've been riding the 46/16 up and down hills for months, was I always doing it wrong?

46/18 is good if you don't mind spinning for some speed. Try the 17 tooth for a good balance between the two...
No you haven't been doing it wrong some people can push larger gears than others. I live in NYC and I can go up the largest hills on 46/16 and I'm considering going up another two teeth for more of a challenge.

Well I have more problems with the hill climbs around here. They are long and not too steep, yet in a straight shot, they kill me.

46/18 would be my suggestion, it's very close to what I run on my sputnik of a 19/48 in my native Echo Park which is very hilly, I can't get home from ANYWHERE without a decent grade + a couple of climbs. I think it's a dandy gearing but it does require a good deal of spinning to keep up with some of my friends on higher gear ratios.

What cadence are you pushing on the hills, and how much higher do you think you need it to be?
What's your cruising cadence, and how much faster could you comfortably pedal?
What max cadence are you spinning downhill or with a tailwind, and how much faster can you spin?
If you want your cadence ~6% higher, go 17t. If you want 12%, go 18t.

and a 18 tooth would help me in the wind. The wind flows down the hill, so going up a block is a killer.

freewheels are so expensive. it'd be way too much to get 17t and 18t ones.
