Threading on All City axles... WTF?!
1 Attachment(s)
Just dished a new rear wheel using a standard 120mm All City rear hub.
It's on an old frame and in retrospect, I should've gone with 130mm to compensate for the chainline but I stuck with it and just spaced it out a bit. Anyway, I'm left with hardly any threading on the left axle (non-drive side) and the nut has barely any room to screw on. The problem is the included All City nuts are absolute friggin MONSTERS. They're like a nut/washer combo and the threading doesn't start until about 5mm into the nut... so it barely grabs. I tried getting a smaller nut at my LBS but they didn't have anything which would fit it. I also tried the local hardware store and no luck there either! See attached pic. The thread is much finer than any of my other axles... Does anyone know where I can get a smaller nut which would fit? |
Get a longer axle or cold-set the frame.

The nuts your talking about with the attached washer are standard track nuts and nothing out of the ordinary. The axle should be long enough to accomodate 130mm spacing - it just sounds like you need to add some spacers and adjust your axle to center it. Not a big deal.

Gotcha. I didn't know All-City made two versions.

Not necessarily. The standard All-City rear track hub axle is designed for 120mm spacing only, and cannot accommodate additional spacers. All-City does make a hub with a longer axle that can accept spacing up to 130mm.
So all track nuts are the same size? I've been reading about different thread sizes, that's all. Guess I'll have to go further abroad and find a bike store who stocks a better range of them! |
