gearing options for old guys
I've got a brand spanking new Mercier Kilo TT Pro running 48 x 18. It's a bit to much gear for this 60 year old guy. I've done a little Googling and it appears that going to a 19 cog is as high as I can go.
A couple of questions. 1. Is 19 the largest cog available? If not, where do I find more cog teeth online? 2. Am I going to have to go with a smaller chain ring? If so, where is a good source for Sugino rings online? I'm not seeing a lot of options with smaller Sugino's except the Messenger. Opinions and advice please |
how's the terrain where you'll be riding? I was hesitant at first as well as that was my stock gearing and my commute home has some good climb home and 48/17 turned out ok

Could not resist. There are bigger cogs out there. And or a smaller chainring. |
48x18 is about 70 gear inches. A 39 tooth chainring would bring you down to 57 gear inches. That should be low enough. You'll need a 130 BCD (Bolt Circle Diameter) single speed chainring. Try Universal Cycles.
I'm 58 and ride 76 gear inches but I'm standing a lot which I actually enjoy very much. |
terrain
the terrain is quite variable here in western Washington so lots depends on where I'm headed. I'm not commuting on the bike so routes vary a lot.

I just finished putting together a 39x18 single speed (spin to win) for the pops. It's real fun.
