question about expensive $80 Sugino RD crank arms
Just a few wees ago, I bought my first bike and it was a real mess. I have been working on it. cleaning, upgrading, the works. Unfortunately the crank arms and pedals are in poor condition, so I'm going to need to replace em soon and I'm lookin at some Suginos to match the messenger chainring that I recently bought.
My problem is that they are 80 dollars and I don't know how much of a difference it really makes.
The only reason I would get them now is to finally install the square Tange BB that I got to replace the stock BB which is splined, of course.
If not for me wanting to save up for an expensive custom wheelset, I'd have hastily ordered them online already
So anyhow, should I just replace the pedals and wait until after the wheelset to change out the BB/Arms???

Here. Provide us with more information. For example what kind of bike it is. Maybe even what upgrades have been done, and what problems you've faced so far. In general a more expensive part isn't the answer. However, as we all know, aesthetics and personal bike pride are important. Vain b*******. Pardon my French.
Oh, and of course, pictures. Without pictures no one will care to look haha. Make sure it's a drive side shot and that your seat, handlebars and brakes (or lack there of) are set up exactly how everyone else would do it. If not you will catch some crap.
And what sugino cranks are you looking at? I could be wrong, but I think they make more then one.

Hopefully I'm not hijacking as I see this being directly related to the OP's question. What to look for in crank arms/bottom brackets? I'm a roadie -- have a fixed gear, there's a huge amount of flex in the crank arms on this pista crankset compared to my sram red setup. What features to look for and at what price points do they really come in?

Yes I'm riding a kilo tt that I got on craogslist. I can't post any pictures just yet, but I can list the components.
Its got:
origin 8 straight bars with a front break installed
No name 1 1/8th stem
"Aheadset" 1inch headset (lol)
All city big block 1" fork
Kilo tt 52 frame
Turbo saddle
No name Cup cone bearing hubs on some no name deep v style rims. I believe the back has 36 spokes and the front has 32
No name 17t cog and lockring
46t mesenger chain ring
Heavy duty chain. Not sure about the brand name, got it for ten bucks
Stock truvativ bb and crank arms
Stock pedals
Mks cage, christop single straps.
It needs so much work..

What do you mean poor condition? An $80 crankset is not much of an upgrade over the stock Truvativ Touros.

It doesn't match the tange bottom bracket I bought which is square
The old bottom bracket is beginning to rust, as well. There's nothing wrong with the cranks really, I've just been wanting to improve my drivetrain and made a mistake with buying the bracket. The pedals definitely have to go since there is a lot of rust damage in the nut and bearing housing
Right now I'm tempted to pick up some origin crank arms for cheap since I really don't know how 80 dollar arms will help me right now.

Your cog is slipping.
You know that different cranksets - even though they may call for a square-taper BB - require different length spindles, right?
You did it ass-backward and now you have to buy a crankset that will work with your BB. What length is the spindle?

From what I hear, it's not a bad crank and pretty affordable. The kid would probably never notice a difference between these and dura ace track cranks anyways.

No, not at all. Even though I've got a bunch of shiny new sets of 75s on the shelf at Retrogression HQ, I'm still running the same set of RDs on my 722.

I wish I had coughed up 30 extra dollars and gotten the rd instead of the xd a year or 2 ago, but I probably wouldn't notice much of a difference in terms of performance, but the BCD is kind of odd so if I wanted a new chainring it could prove to be difficult.

d'OH!
Ah well. I Guess I'll just wait until after my wheelset to drop money on those arms -- they're working alright anyways.

I'm not sure Truvativ Touros to Sugino RDs are worth the upgrade?
Why not just get a new ISIS BB?

Because he already bought the BB, and I'm assuming he doesn't want to go through the hassle of returning it.
