MPH Limits of BMX pedals on Single Speeds.

Is there a MPH at which BMX pedals or platforms will loose to a guy with clipless pedals given they have the same power? Who in here has the highest avg speed with BMX pedals without straps?

This really should be in the "Dear Carleton" thread.

Ha! I lold.

homebrewk 07-07-11 03:16 PM

But seriously. The "max mph" differs from rider to rider. For example, Thor Hushovd could go way faster than me ever if he was riding on BMX pedals w/no foot retention and I was riding with custom track pedals, steel cages, and laminated Toshi straps.

4000 mph

Pedals dont really travel forward at any different speed than the bike does, so MPH(or any other linier speed measurment) isnt the right thing to measue. If you are worried about wearing out he bearings then RPMs would matter, if youre worrying about snapping the body or axle the power transfered is what matters.

And when you add straps...

Someone should send this into Mythbusters so we can end the "Straps or clips add xx% power/straps and clips do nothing" debate.

I'd imagine duration is more important than speed. A 3 hour ride would in most cases net the clipped-in rider more mileage than the platform dude. A lot of BMX dudes can spin REALLY good for short runs.

I do! Of course I have an 80 tooth chainring, 12T cog and only ride downhill and with the wind.

I'd love to see those pasty redheads try riding clipless.

Should be somewhere around one pedal rotation (once the rider gets clipped in).

Couple of factors, from a standing clipped in start, the clipless rider will have the advantage from the start.

If it were... say a cyclocross running start, the platform rider might get a second or two advantage while the clipless rider gets clipped in... but that advantage will be negated the second the clipless rider starts pedallin'.

So basically as soon as the clipless rider is clipped in, platforms lose the advantage.

To confuse things more: BMX racers now use clipless pedals.

i think he's worrying about his feet possibly not staying on the pedals at high rpm...

my $0.02:

clipless is faster, period. you can apply power during more of the pedal stroke, and you can get sloppy at crazy rpms without losing a pedal.

evilcryalotmore 07-07-11 08:17 PM

I dont use pedals.

Still legal to use them when racing mtb's in 4x and DH.
