Why Kilo TT?

Been browsing this forum for a while and I've been a fixed rider for 1.5 years now riding an IRO and always see people talking about the Kilo TT as a great starter bike. My question is...why?

I don't doubt that it's a great starter with all of what everyone says, but I'd just like some detail as to why it's so praised on this forum.

If you actually read through the threads, I'm sure you would have found the answer. Can you find a better steel fixed gear, new, for under $400?

Alright, since the Kilo TT is really THE bike to have for people starting out, how about others that don't live in the United States? BD don't deliver anywhere else.

Move to the USA. Problem solved.

For 350 you get higher quality components and a frame with a higher quality steel (Reynolds 520 where as other entry level bikes use CrMo/HiTen). This allows you to swap out other parts without replacing frame - arguably one of the more important parts of a bike. If I knew what I know now, I would have bought a kilo in a heartbeat. Why buy lower quality steel and put **** on **** when for 350$ you can get one of the best bangs for your buck money can buy?

yummygooey 07-08-11 07:36 AM

I think Reynolds 520 is 4130, but it's double butted and has a proprietary shape.

And yes, I like the Kilo a lot more than the $280 options from BD. I wish I had bought a Kilo in the first place as well.

It seems it is. Still learning my steels :)

whats better, money or street cred?

EssEllSee 07-08-11 11:23 AM

Street cred obviously

It comes with a 48x16 gear. My question (and don't flame me here since I don't ride fixed gear), but wouldn't you want a different gearing since that only gives you one skid patch? As part of my request to not be flamed, I must add that I'm not sure if the Kilo TT is a bike that you would even skid in the first place.

Forgive my naivete.

yummygooey 07-08-11 11:56 AM

You probably want a different gearing because 48x16 is a pretty tall gearing.

EssEllSee 07-08-11 12:10 PM

The type of bike has nothing to do with skidding. But like yummygooey said, bikesdirect has a bad habit of formatting their bikes with an insanely high gear ratio for most riders. Seeing as many beginners start there, I dont know why they just dont throw a different rear cog on there. 48x16 would give you 81 GI, which IMO is uncomfortable.

actually every time you post "kilo tt" in a thread you get $1

I agree that for a starter bike recommendation something with less steep angles would make a lot more sense. The motobecane or the windsor seem a lot more appropriate for somebody new to riding.

zackae 07-11-11 08:01 AM

So if we don't live in the US, we don't have other equally value-for-money option?
