I just discovered nice ex-bundeswehr military surplus tank driver shorts in a local 'army stuff' store. Goretex liner, cordura outer, approx. 100 euros.

Will get me a pair of those.

100 euros for a used pair of shorts? By God man you've been drinking too much absolut!

I like the cutoff fatigue idea. Modern fatigues are made of a rip stop synthetic blend that should wear well.

FWIW, a company called Endura makes some interesting pants specifically for cycling that they call 3/4 Humvee, kind of 3/4 length nylon cargo pants with a lycra crotch panel. You can see them at endura.co.uk. This model is not actually sold in the states, but I emailed the US website and was told they would special order some from UK for $84.95. Still more than I wanted to spend, but less than many similar pants.

or do something similar with some kevlar:

just remember to instruct them to put it on the outside.

blood stains, speed kills, fast cars, cheap thrills, fresh girls, fine wine, I lost my sense I lost control I lost my mind.

Not exactly aesthetic, but I have found soccer shorts---specifically Umbros---to be nearly indestructible. I have a few pair that are more than 10 years old, although I've only ridded in them regularly for the past 2 years. I commute a couple of hours every day. I even wrecked in a pair and slid over (wet) asphalt and there wasn't even a tear in them.

For the cold, I go with roadie padded cycling pants; kind of queer looking, but they keep my legs warm and stay out of my chain.

Heh, I was just listening to that album last night, getting pumped up to write a report on Pfizer.
