Miche Advance Cranks and Kilo problems....

So I've been riding a Kilo frameset for a while. A little while ago i picked up a newer miche advanced crankset off of craigslist for an excellent price. the 144bcd one. It also came with 2 different iso bottom brackets. 108mm and 110mm. Everywhere i looked told me that this crank used the shorter spindle length. once the cranks were installed, they looked dangerously close in hitting the chainstays. later, i tried using the 110mm, which looked better, but after a few rides i was hearing/feeling a horrible "clunk" noise. Now i've heard these bb's tend to come loose, so i removed the cranks and bottom bracket and cleaned/regreased the threads. i do bike delivery and after about a day of riding im feeling it again, although not as horrifyingly bad. could it be that i am installing this bottom bracket incorrectly? i am following the same directions that i have used for any other one. should i use loctite? am i missing something that should be obvious?

have you looked to see if your chain ring bolts are properly tightened with your crank arms?

The BB spindle is supposed to be JIS, not ISO. Your crankarm may be bottoming out on the spindle.

yep, i checked the bolts. greased and tightened. also, miche advanced cranksets do use ISO spindle bottom brackets

You are right. My bad. Forgot they are Italian.

Nothing really to overlook. They're just square taper cranks. Should be a simple install.

Perhaps the previous owner rounded the cranks interface.

The sound may be coming from elsewhere. If you work on your bike, work on your bike. Time for an fresh overhaul and troubleshoot.

is the frame being damaged? my chainring scratches my chainstay.

omsbythedozen 07-19-11 10:06 AM

nahh, its not being damaged. it just comes really close to the chainstay. this isn't tha major issue. i checked the cranks and the interface appears fine to me as well...... i m using this bike quite often, so i kinda tend to keep my bike in constant state of overhaul. the only thing i can think of is maybe this bottom bracket is no good? it seemed completely fine during the install.....

My miche BB also makes weird noises. At first I was freaked out when I heard it (I did the same thing as you. took it out, inspected, greased and reinstalled at proper torque.) After doing this a few times I figured I had a lemon so I bought a new one because they are ao cheap. I Installed the new one and I had similar noises coming from it, but I've been using it problem free for 6 months. I'm thinking about replacing it with a Phil BB because even if the noises are normal, they still bother me.

To clarify- the noise I hear is more of a groaning noise not a "clunk" as you described

Wait, Is your bb comeing loose? Like it is threading while you ride? Might want to check the threads of the frame or bb.

omsbythedozen 07-19-11 11:28 AM

it does not seem like its coming loose at all. i just get a big "clunk" sound every once in a while that is very unnerving....

Miche BBs are notorious for loosening themselves.

I had a small, quite click sound on every down pedal on the right crank arm. And it was because my Miche BB was loose.

That's the only problem I have ever had with the BB though.
