From a Hybrid to Fixed - Help.

I have a Trek fx 7.2 hybrid and I recently got into fixed gears bikes.

I want to purchase one and was debating on this:

Aristotle Base, what do you guys think?

Any other suggestions?

I like straight bar, and breaks.

Straight bars are like $10.

Brakes can be had for like $50.

No use spending money on a heavy, high-tensile steel fashion bike when you can easily get a much better bike cheaper and swap out a couple parts...

redpear 08-03-11 12:35 PM

Then buy a Kilo TT for $380 and spend $30 or so and put risers on it. It comes with brakes.

Those republic bikes are not worth it.

If you go to your LBS and ask for some used risers, they probably have a ton of them in a box. Find some you like, I payed 5 bucks for mine and they work great.

dont tell people you bought a bike from urban outfitters and it should work out just fine. In addition, dont get breaks, get brakes.

redpear, if you talk this guy into buying a kilo, remember that you have to split your sales commission with ianjk & UCF Eric

You're way too fast. But to drive the point home....

Kilo TT

Kilo comes with brakes. And dont get a flat bar - I chopped my drops into one just to see what all the craze was and it absolutely sucked. 1 hand position. Anyone riding on a flat bar is most likely riding <1 mile to their local coffee shop and home again.

redpear 08-03-11 02:01 PM

I don't like flat bars, but I do like my risers. You actually get two hand positions--hands on the outside grips, and hands in the middle near the stem. From here, I bend my elbows to cut into a headwind.

mmmm hi ten steel frames for more than the cost of a kilo tt

I decided on this, how does this differ to the TT? Only reason I chose this cause its cheapest.

Also is it easy to convert this to freewheel? and cost?

prooftheory 08-03-11 05:48 PM

I don't think there is a difference except for the missing advertisements. That's what I would go with.

andrizzle 08-03-11 05:51 PM

that is a good choice.

not sure if that bike comes stock with a flip flop hub, but either way, i wouldn't be hard to add the freewheel. Good Choice!

UCF Eric 08-03-11 05:54 PM

To concert to a SS buy and thread on a freewheel. Found here

andrizzle 08-03-11 06:00 PM

i'm sorry, but i have a quick question. how do you put a freewheel on the "fixed" side of a hub? i was under the impression a hub had to be threaded in the opposite direction to work with a freewheel cog.

UCF Eric 08-03-11 06:06 PM

No, freewheel threading is standard thread. Which means you can put it where a cog would sit on the fixed side.

andrizzle 08-03-11 06:11 PM

i've never coasted before so i still don't get it. but it doesn't matter. i'll figure it out when i'm older

tjemitchell27 08-03-11 10:07 PM

That Kilo comes with a flip flop hub, which means one side is threaded specifically for a freewheel, the other for fixed, but you can put a freewheel on the fixed side as well

Thanks, but in the description it says this :

FLIP FLOP rear hub. Fixed and freewheel sides.
This bike comes with a Fixed gear cog installed on one side of the flip-flop hub. It does not come with a freewheel.

Its a little confusing.

You just have to put a freewheel on the other side of the hub, which is sold separately.

A fixed hub has two sets of threads. The larger, normal direction threading nearer the spokes is the same threading as a freewheel thread, but then outside that is a smaller set of reverse threads for a lockring. So you can put a freewheel on a fixed hub or the fixed side of a flip flop hub if you wish.
